There's a beverage company — one you've definitely heard of — that spent somewhere north of $4 million figuring out how to make their drink taste blue. Not blueberry. Not blue raspberry. Just the concept of blue. The cool, wide-open, slightly electric feeling of a color that has no flavor. And according to internal consumer testing that leaked to a couple of industry blogs last year, it kind of worked.

What Synesthesia Actually Is (And Why Brands Want to Fake It)
Real synesthesia — the neurological phenomenon where stimulating one sense automatically triggers another — affects somewhere between 3 and 4 percent of the population. These are people who genuinely see colors when they hear music, or taste shapes when they read words. It's not metaphorical. It's hardwired.
For most of human history, synesthesia was considered a curiosity. Artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Pharrell Williams have credited it with shaping their creative output. Neuroscientists studied it with cautious fascination. And then, at some point in the last decade, the marketing world noticed it — and decided they wanted to manufacture it on demand, for everyone, whether your brain came wired that way or not.
The result is a rapidly growing field called cross-modal sensory design, and it sits somewhere uncomfortable between neuroscience, consumer psychology, and outright perceptual manipulation.
The Labs Behind the Blur
Several research groups embedded inside major tech and FMCG companies are now actively working on what they call "induced sensory correspondence" — essentially, training the brain to associate stimuli across sense categories through repeated exposure and carefully engineered product design.
One approach uses haptic feedback layered with audio frequencies to make a product feel like it has a color temperature. Another uses scent-release timing synchronized with visual color gradients to create a phantom flavor experience. A startup out of San Francisco (currently in stealth, though they've presented at two neurotechnology conferences) is developing a wearable that delivers micro-electrical pulses to the fingertips timed to specific visual inputs — essentially teaching your skin to "read" color.
These aren't fringe experiments. Major consumer electronics brands, at least two luxury automotive companies, and several food and beverage giants have either funded or quietly partnered with labs working in this space.
The money is serious. Industry analysts tracking neurotech investment estimated the sensory design sector pulled in over $2.3 billion in venture and corporate funding in 2023 alone.
Neuroscientists Are Not Chill About This
Not everyone in the research community is celebrating.
"There's a meaningful difference between designing an experience that resonates with how humans naturally process sensation, and deliberately engineering false perceptual associations to drive purchasing behavior," says one cognitive neuroscientist at a major U.S. research university, who asked not to be named because their institution has funding relationships with several companies in this space. "We're edging toward the second category, and I don't think the public conversation has caught up with how far along this actually is."
The ethical tension is real. When a brand engineers a sensory loop that makes their product feel, smell, and taste like something your brain didn't naturally connect — and then sells you that experience as authentic — where does marketing end and neurological manipulation begin?
It's a question that existing consumer protection frameworks weren't built to answer. The FTC regulates false advertising. It doesn't have a category for false perception.
Consumer Testimonials: Caught in the Loop
People are noticing, even if they can't always articulate what's happening.
A 29-year-old graphic designer in Austin described trying a limited-edition snack that a major chip brand released last fall with heavy "synesthetic" marketing. "I kept thinking it tasted orange," she said. "Not orange flavored — just orange, like the feeling of looking at something bright. I knew it was a plain potato chip. But something about the packaging, the crunch sound, the smell — it all added up to this color in my head. It was trippy. I bought three more bags."
A 34-year-old in Chicago who works in UX design described a similar experience with a meditation app that layers specific binaural tones with color-shifting visuals. "After about two weeks of daily use, I started associating certain colors with sounds even outside the app. Like, I'd see a deep teal and kind of hear something low and slow. I don't know if that's the app working or me going slightly unhinged."
Both of them kept using the products. That's kind of the point.
The Art World Is Already There
Here's the thing — the avant-garde has been playing in this territory for decades. Artists working in immersive installation, experimental sound design, and multisensory performance have long been interested in blurring perceptual categories. James Turrell's light installations famously destabilize your sense of depth and space. Ryoji Ikeda's data art makes you feel like numbers have physical weight. These are experiences that deliberately scramble your sensory processing, and we call them transcendent.
The difference, artists and critics would argue, is intention and consent. You walk into a Turrell installation knowing you're going to be messed with. You buy a bag of chips expecting a snack, not a neurological experiment.
But that line is getting genuinely blurry — and not always in a bad way. Some designers working in synthetic synesthesia are approaching it with real artistic seriousness, creating consumer products that function more like wearable art experiences than traditional goods. A few independent perfumers and sound designers are collaborating on what they're calling "perceptual objects" — things that exist specifically to create cross-modal confusion as a form of beauty.
That feels different. That feels like something.
So What Do You Do With This Information?
Honestly? Probably nothing immediate. You're going to keep buying things. Brands are going to keep engineering the experience around those things to be as neurologically sticky as possible. That's the deal we've all implicitly agreed to by participating in consumer culture.
But there's something worth sitting with here — the idea that your perception, the raw data your senses feed your brain, is increasingly a design surface. That the experience of tasting, hearing, seeing, and feeling is being shaped upstream of your awareness by people with very specific financial motivations.
Some of that shaping is genuinely beautiful. Some of it is a little predatory. Most of it is somewhere in the middle, in that vast gray zone where commerce and experience and neuroscience all swirl together into something that doesn't have a clean name yet.
The vortex is real, in other words. It's just got a marketing budget now.
