The Machine That Taught Itself to Sing

Somewhere in a converted warehouse space outside of Chicago, a reel-to-reel tape recorder is eating its own tail. The tape loops back. The signal passes through a 1970s spring reverb unit, then through a mixer with a busted channel that adds a faint, unpredictable crackle, then back into the tape head. The sound that comes out the other end is not the sound that went in. It has mutated. It has, in some genuinely strange sense, decided to become something else.

This is analog recursion — the practice of building feedback systems from vintage equipment and letting them evolve in real time, with minimal human intervention. And the artists doing it aren't hobbyists tinkering with old gear. They're making a philosophical argument about what music is, what machines can become, and why the pursuit of digital perfection might be the most artistically bankrupt thing that ever happened to sound.

Feedback as Composition

The concept of feedback in music isn't new. Jimi Hendrix weaponized it. The Velvet Underground let it drone. Sonic Youth built entire tuning systems around it. But what the current generation of analog recursion artists is doing goes further — they're not using feedback as a texture or an effect. They're using it as the compositional engine itself.

The idea is straightforward in theory and deeply chaotic in practice. You take a signal — a tone, a fragment of vinyl, a synthesizer patch — and you route it through a chain of analog hardware that feeds back into its own input. Each pass through the circuit changes the signal slightly. Imperfections in the equipment — worn tape heads, aging capacitors, slightly off-spec resistors — introduce micro-variations that compound over time. What starts as a single tone might, over the course of twenty minutes, become an entirely different organism.

"The machine is composing," says Terrence Okafor, a Chicago-based sound artist who has been building analog feedback systems for six years. "I set the initial conditions. After that, I'm just a witness."

Okafor's setup is a lovingly maintained collection of damaged equipment: a Teac 4-track from the early '80s with a motor that runs slightly slow, two vintage Moog modules, a broken spring reverb that introduces random resonant spikes, and a vinyl turntable with a cracked platter bearing that causes subtle pitch wobble. None of this is accidental. The imperfections are the point.

Why Vinyl? Why Tape? Why Now?

There's a reason this movement is specifically analog, and it's not nostalgia — or at least, it's not just nostalgia. Digital systems, for all their power and precision, are fundamentally intolerant of feedback. Route a digital signal back into itself and the system either clips out, generates a predictable artifact, or crashes. The math is too clean. The errors are too consistent.

Analog hardware is different. It's physical. Electrons move through components that have aged, that have temperature coefficients, that respond to the humidity in the room. A feedback loop through analog gear is a genuinely open system — it interacts with its environment in ways that can't be fully predicted or replicated.

"Digital feedback is a known quantity," says Marisol Reyes, a Los Angeles-based experimental musician whose solo project, Dust Meridian, has been building a small but devoted following through Bandcamp and underground tape releases. "Analog feedback is a conversation. The gear talks back. Sometimes it argues."

Reyes works primarily with a pair of vintage Roland synthesizers routed through a modified cassette four-track, with a custom-built feedback patch that she describes as "deliberately unstable." Her recordings — released on limited-run cassette, naturally — are hour-long documents of these systems evolving in real time. No edits. No overdubs. Just the machine, talking to itself, slowly becoming something.

The Anti-Perfection Manifesto

It would be easy to frame analog recursion as simple Luddism — artists rejecting digital tools because they're precious about the old ways. But spend any time with the people actually doing this work and a more coherent philosophy emerges.

The argument isn't that digital tools are bad. It's that the culture of digital production has become pathologically allergic to error. Auto-tune, quantization, noise reduction, pitch correction — the entire architecture of modern music production is built around eliminating the unexpected. Every imperfection is a problem to be solved. Every deviation from the grid is a mistake.

Analog recursion inverts this entirely. The imperfection is the content. The deviation is the art. The machine's inability to perfectly reproduce what it received is not a flaw — it's the mechanism by which something genuinely new gets created.

Jordan Fisk, who runs a small experimental music label out of Portland called Slow Collapse Records, puts it bluntly: "We've optimized the soul out of recorded music. These artists are trying to build systems where the soul can sneak back in through the cracks."

Slow Collapse has released work from a dozen artists working in the analog recursion space over the past three years, all on physical media — vinyl and cassette only, no digital distribution. It's a deliberate statement. The medium is part of the message.

A Movement Finding Its Moment

Analog recursion is still genuinely underground. You won't find these artists on mainstream playlists or in Rolling Stone. But the cultural conditions for something like this to break through feel more present than they've been in years.

There's a growing appetite, especially among younger listeners who grew up entirely in the digital era, for music that feels unpredictable. That has texture and risk. That couldn't have been made by an algorithm, because no algorithm would have been sloppy enough, weird enough, patient enough to let the machine make its own decisions over the course of an hour.

Okafor, for his part, isn't interested in whether analog recursion becomes a movement or stays a quiet cult. He's got a new piece he's been developing for three months — a system that feeds a 1968 organ through a chain of six vintage effects units in a closed loop, left to run overnight while he sleeps.

"I never know what I'll find in the morning," he says, and the way he says it sounds less like frustration and more like the specific joy of someone who has learned to genuinely trust the unknown.

The machine keeps looping. The loop keeps changing. And somewhere in that recursion, something that might be music, might be accident, might be both — keeps becoming.
