The Team Sport of Association Football, More Commonly Known as Soccer or Football

soccer Steering away from the Christmas spirit for once, I want to mention a few things about one of the sports I really like: Soccer. This is a sport I played before and during my 20-year stint in the military, which I can't play anymore due to injuries incurred by other things.

Football or Soccer

If I didn't look it up, I never would have known that the official name of the sport is "Association Football". Perhaps things have to be clarified with this sport because of the other American football sport. All I know is that it's called soccer in some countries and football (or futbol) in other countries and bears little resemblance to American football.

Regardless of what it's called, I always enjoyed playing, but I never could stand to sit on the sidelines and watch it or watch it on TV. I'm sure the live soccer commentary had something to do with it. I always found live commentary to be a bit annoying.

No Sports for Me

It doesn't matter if what kind of sports it is, I really can't stand to watch it on TV or on the sidelines. If I can't play, I'm not interested. Injuries caused by mishaps in the last 10 or so years prevent me from getting into anything that requires a lot of action. Soccer is actually an exception, so I'm contradicting myself. I can watch it on TV in a mind-numbing kind of way if there's nothing else to watch and if I actually watch TV (rarely).

Now, if you were expecting more out of me this time, sorry. I'm so busy with other commitments and if I hadn't spotted something that reminded me of the one sport I used to like so much, I probably wouldn't have stopped to write this.

I do not understand why in England it is called football and in US soccer…

  2. I'm a football fan and love it. I agree that it's often most fun to actually play, although you find that watching a televised match will grow on you over time.

Football, soccer suks, foot – ball, hand-ball – so it must be that.

I'm sorry to hear that you can no longer play most sports. It's definitely hard to go from being active to having to watch for your body and restraining from a lot of physical activity. I also suffered a knee injury and was recommended to no longer play soccer. I went against my doctors orders when I found a sports authority coupon and I took it a a sign to get back into the game. And sure enough, 4 years after that I still play soccer every Sunday!

I also love Football/Soccer but living in Canada people don't really follow the sport much, just when world cup or Euro Cup is on. I think the best soccer is the Champions league. I just started a blog about the soccer elite, the Superstars of the game. Any visits would be much appreciated, thanks.

It's normal anyway that you feel not interested about the sport since you are not playing it. I have the same feeling too though like you do, there is an exemption :)
