PHPText Blogger: Pre-Alpha Software Notes

I'm working on a programming project as the sole developer of a browser-based software application. I've dubbed it "PHPText Blogger" as a working name because it's only using PHP and text files formatted specifically for this application.

In order to use this browser-based application on Windows or Linux, I only need to have a web server installed which includes the PHP software. I'm using XAMPP for Windows right now.

Reducing AdSense Impressions from Robots

terminator (Update: On second thought, never mind. AVG has seen the error of their ways and the other code simply keeps logs from showing the Live Search referrer data. I'm blocking the log data a different way now. Another update will be in a later post with a similar title.)

I've spent the last umpteen hours scouring the Internet for this information. There are two robot sources using JavaScript robots and causing extra AdSense impressions. They had to be terminated.

Here are the .htaccess rules that can stop them both:

My Final Windows Upgrade

Windows XP I'm a little slow on the uptake today. While going through a website for a review on my Blog & Article Reviews blog, I remembered that this PC needed to be updated with service pack 3 for Windows XP.

Get the Full Edition of Microsoft Windows Vista for the Price of an Upgrade

Windows Vista Sometimes I come across some information that makes me to want to explode if I don't tell everyone I know about it. It doesn't have to be a secret; all it has to be is something that isn't well known yet.

While I'm no Windows proponent in any shape of the word, I consider it my duty to tell you how to get Microsoft Windows Vista for less than full retail price. That is, if you don't already have Vista installed.

My Contribution to Microsoft

Due to the overwhelming popularity of my recommended slogan for Microsoft, I decided to create and contribute this road sign to aid their efforts in becoming the worst corporation in existence:

Do More Evil

Microsoft and the 'Do More Evil' Slogan

One of Google's slogans is "do no evil". After reading the long article that exposes Microsoft's attempts to collect royalties on patents that are supposedly violated by open source software, Microsoft should add "do more evil" as one of its slogans.

I started reading Microsoft takes on the free world at CNNMoney.com with an open mind. After I finished, I came to the conclusion that Microsoft isn't content to have the largest share of the proprietary software market. Microsoft wants to destroy its competitors completely.

I don't have anything personal against Microsoft software or its operating system. I believe that people should use what they need to get the job done, even if that job is just getting on the Internet. At this point in time, I believe that the Microsoft Corporation is its own worst enemy. Their continued attacks on all things not Microsoft is driving people away from their products, not toward them. It's kind of like how the RIAA is driving music lovers away from mainstream music.

I think in the end game, Microsoft is going to lose in a major way. After the US Patent Office declares a whole slew of their "after the fact" patents invalid, Microsoft is going to lose corporate clients as fast as they've been losing home users. Are makers of other operating systems and related software products ready and willing to fill the void? Oh, yes. Eager is more like it.

A few short years ago, my opinion was that Linux had a long way to go to be better than Microsoft. I had so much trouble with drivers and hardware cooperating with each other that I had no choice but to keep going back to Windows. I knew the day would come when Linux would be better than Windows. That day has come and gone. I'm absolutely positive that I'll be successful in moving away from Windows completely the next time I attempt to do so.

More blogs that are talking about this:

Ask the VCMicrosoft – The New Destructor of Innovation: "Now Steve Ballmer is seemingly on a press tour saying that Microsoft deserves royalites from anyone who uses free software and yes, this includes Linux."

The Technology Liberation FrontMicrosoft's Shell Game: "The impression Microsoft wants to give here is that free software is of high quality because it's copied from Microsoft's own software."

Patent Law Blog (Patently-O)Microsoft: FOSS Infringes Our Patents: "Microsoft's patent filing have ramped-up significantly over the past five-years, and the company will likely top the list of new-patent-owners in the coming years."

O'Reilly ONLamp BlogLooks like Microsoft is ramping up for Son of SCO: "Yep, no more rumors, just the plain reality that Microsoft is going to take their portfolio of laughable patents and start sticking it to the open source community legally, as spelled out in the most recent Fortune."

HaackedIs Fighting Open Source With Patents A Smart Move By Microsoft?: "Instead, I want to focus on the negative perception of such a move for Microsoft and the potential effects of that."

Jeremy's BlogMicrosoft takes on the free world: "It appears that the battle lines are being drawn and the cold war of software patent world may be coming to an end. The players involved here are huge and the amount of money astronomical. Who has the most to lose? I'd say Microsoft."

Upgrading to Windows Vista? Just Say No!

I'll upgrade to Windows Vista when they pry this laptop from my cold, dead hands (with apologies to Charlton Heston).

I paid for Windows XP three times; twice as new installs on built-my-own boxes and once as OEM on this laptop. I don't like paying for an upgrade when an upgrade is not really an upgrade. It should have been Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

I hate to rant, but I've read the specs and looked at the screenshots. Windows Vista is what XP should be. Without going into too much detail, my laptop with AVG Free Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, and other non-Microsoft products is more secure than Vista out of the box. I know it, and they know it.

When the time comes and Windows XP doesn't do the trick for me anymore, I'll be moving on to some flavor of Linux.

Do You Really Want Windows Vista?

Think about the computer you have right now. Think about how big the hard drive, how much memory it has, whether it has a separate graphics card or if the video uses shared memory. If your computer is running flawlessly with Windows XP right now, it will probably be a dog with Windows Vista.

I don't have the inclination to stop and compare the requirements, but I'll briefly mention what Windows Vista requires at a bare minimum (and note what my laptop, about a year old, has):

  • A modern processor (at least 800MHz) – I squeak past with my AMD Turion 64.
  • 512 MB of system memory (if you have a separate graphics card, 1 GB if it's on the motherboard) – I have exactly 1 GB with the video on the motherboard.
  • A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable – I'm safe, I'm already running that version of DirectX.
  • A 40 GB hard drive with 15 GB free – I rarely see anything less than 60 GB hard drives for sale, mine is 80.

So you see, my laptop will barely run Windows Vista if all the eye candy and special features are turned on. I run Windows XP with damn near every extra feature in place and it runs like a champ. I can run modern video games on it, but they're choppy at best.

Windows Vista will be released to the general public in the next few days. If you've got a screaming PC with way more than the minimum, I say go for it if you can afford it. As for myself, no thanks.
