Former President Corazon Aquino died in her sleep at approximately 3:18 am today (August 1), Philippines local time. She had been suffering from colon cancer since March of last year. Corazon Aquino, the plain housewife of a deceased politician who was assassinated in 1983, rose to presidency in 1986 as a result of the first People Power Revolution. She was named "Woman of the Year" by Time Magazine in 1986.

I was going to start by giving a brief history of the Philippines, but I decided against it. The best way to learn about the Philippines is to read the Wikipedia article on the Philippines. What I'm going to do is to relate some of my own history and thoughts about the Philippines.
