Comment King/Queen Award For The Week Ending On January 12, 2008

Since I'm only doing this for my own blog now, it makes it easy to count comments and hand out the award each week. What isn't so easy is choosing a tiebreaker. I had several commenters with the exact same number of comments for the week of January 6-12. Nevertheless, choosing is what I did. Without further ado, the Comment King for the week ending January 12, 2008, is none other than Steve "Stevo" Peer of Asian Ramblings. Here's your badge, Steve:

The image does not include the border. You can add the border by including this in your image tag: style="border:1px solid #000"

Steve's last blog post was little dragon on the water which sports a picture of Bruce Lee's statue in Hong Kong.

This week's award was delayed because I wanted to create the new badge myself. Tell me what you think of it.

Comment King and Queen Awards

The previous post has been updated and the badge has been placed. Due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, I won't be doing a count again (for this blog) until the week of January 6 – 12 of 2008.

I'm designing a new badge myself (no offense, Hari) to signify the change from a multi-blog contest to a contest that's only for this blog. The current badge in the sidebar will remain until a new badge is awarded.

Comment King/Queen Award For The Week Ending On December 15, 2007

(Update: On second thought, I will be continuing this, but only on this blog. It'll give you another good reason to leave comments. I encourage other blog authors to do something like this on your own blogs.)

I'm afraid this was the last week of the contest. The overall lack of enthusiasm for it, as well as the fact that no new blogs desire to participate, doesn't make it worthwhile. I'm sorry, and I appreciate those that have been trying to promote it, but it doesn't appear to be having the intended effect. Here are the results of the current week:

Individual Blog Top Commenters:

Any blogs that want to add themselves to the list, please contact me.

Comment King/Queen:

The Comment Queen Award goes to Tisha Black of CrAzY Working Mom. Feel free to post it on your blog in any manner you see fit.

CrAzY Working Mom

The Rules:

Participating blog authors need to count how many comments per commenter are made during the week, Sunday through Saturday. Send the top commenter (or commenters in the case of a tie) to me by email or contact form, a comment for this post, or a comment for the previous contest post.

The goal is to not only have frequent commenters on any individual blog, but for commenters to comment on multiple blogs. The king or queen for the week, therefore, is selected based on being the top commenter on more than one blog (unless there are no commenters on multiple blogs, in which case it's important to have the comment counts for the top commenters).

Past Winners:

The badge winner for the previous post is now in place. Participating blogs, as well as the recipient, are encouraged to post the badge on their blogs in any manner you wish.

I'm surprised at the lack of participating blogs. Is counting comments for a week really that hard? Please recognize your frequent commenters by joining in on the weekly content. Here are the most recent results:

Comment King/Queen Award For The Week Ending On November 17, 2007

The past few days were a test run, the 15th through the 17th of November, 2007. I briefly mentioned the contest to see what kind of interest it would spark. Today, being the beginning of a new week, is the perfect day to tell you how it all works.

Blog authors who choose to participate need to do nothing more than count the number of comments per commenter he or she receives from Sunday through Saturday of each week and send that information to me, in any way that works (comments, contact page, email, etc.). I just need to know who the person is and where that person is from. If two or more have the same count, send them all.

What I'll do is mention each top commenter for each blog in my weekly post (like this one). I'll add the individual blog top commenters together and award a badge to the top commenter for all the blogs involved. There will be no tie breakers. If two or more have the same number, they all get a badge. The badge will be shown here and those selected can copy the badge to their own websites (if they have one).

Until all of the names are sent to me, I can't give out any awards. To make this as smooth as possible each week, I'll be editing the post with additions until the following week's announcement. This gives latecomers plenty of time to catch up. Without further ado:

Individual Blog Top Commenters:

Blue Beaver Bear — Hari of Hari's Corner — 3 Comments

Comedy Plus — It's a three-way tie with Ann of A Nice Place In The Sun, Captain Lifecruiser of Lifecruiser, and Lyn of Lynda's Loft — 7 Comments Each

Hari's Corner — Tim of Blue Beaver Beer — Comment Count Pending

The Pisstakers — Hari of Hari's Corner — 2 Comments

Untwisted Vortex — It's a tie between Hari of Hari's Corner and the team of Tim and Ernie at Blue Beaver Beer — Comment Count Pending.

Comment King/Queen:

The Comment King Award goes to Hari of Hari's Corner this time around. Feel free to post it on your blog in any manner you see fit.

Comment King

Quick Update: I'll be checking each participating blog and doing manual counts myself. Not to second guess anyone, but to get the totals for individuals that don't make it as the top commenters for any individual blog. I realize this is going to be time consuming if a lot of blogs participate, but I think it's worth it.

Update 2007-11-20: Thank you, Sandy, for participating and thank you, Stine, for the mention. I have to say I'm surprised at the lack of participants so far.

Update 2007-11-26: There's no way that I can do manual counts for each blog. I'm going to have to trust each blog author to provide the top commenter(s) for the week. Just one blog took me well over an hour and that's with an excellent connection. Can you imagine how many hours it would take to check when more blogs start participating?

Behind The Power Curve

I feel like I'm behind the power curve.

"Behind the power curve" is an old aviation expression (overused during aviation flight training) — when an aircraft's drag starts to slow it down faster than the engine can recover from quickly. It was later generalized to refer to situations where external circumstances cause you to be behind and require a lot of catching up to just to get even with the rest of the world.

How does this relate to me? Nearly three days have passed since the last time I posted an article. It was on the 15th to be exact. There were several factors causing me to be away from doing what I normally do. I will neither explain them nor make excuses for my absence. I'm sure a lot of you are tired of hearing excuses. For those of you who've been reading my blog since before June (when my left leg was injured and infected), it won't come as a shock to learn that I've been intentionally writing less. Those days of four, five and even six posts per day are over. Less than one post per day, however, is NOT intentional.

I still haven't created a badge for Comment King (or Queen). I haven't found a suitable image yet and I'm graphically-challenged. No amount of software can help my uncreative self. I'm still looking. I appreciate the assistance of Ed and Tim in getting the word out, and anyone else who plans to participate and provide the needed data. Perhaps I can get Hari to create a badge of some sort if I beg loudly enough. His Geeky and Meeky strips (as well as my blog logo) are evidence of his visually creative talents. Anyway, I'll announce the ongoing comment contest formally tomorrow, even if I have to make a lame badge myself.

I'll see if doing some blog reading and commenting will bring me out of the curve and help me catch up with everyone else.

Attention Bloggers: We Need To Change

Note the pronoun, we, which I used. I'm as guilty as anyone. All of us bloggers need to change some of our bad habits. It doesn't matter if the habits are forced upon us or if we've developed them out of sheer laziness. One of the bad habits is not commenting and/or replying to comments. While I'd like to blame feedreaders for the lack of commenting that's going on, it's really just a bad habit we've developed. Read the final section to see what I plan to do about it, at least for a period of time.

Responding to comments on our blogs:

When visitors make the effort to comment on our blogs, we need to reply to those comments when the situation calls for it. Granted, not all comments warrant a reply, but it's our responsibility to make sure we check. Even a late reply is better than none at all. No one likes to be ignored. You want your visitors to return, don't you? When in doubt, reply.

Commenting on other blogs:

We all read other blogs at one time or another. We have to or we have no idea what's going on around us. Why is it then that so few of us comment on the blogs we read? I realize some blogs have comments closed and there's nothing we can do about that. Still, we need to make a concentrated effort to comment on every blog we read (where the comments aren't closed), not just those we like.

Comments are appreciation.

Regardless of what you may think, even negative comments are appreciated. How can we improve as bloggers (and we all need improvement even if we won't admit it to ourselves) if we always get nothing but positive comments? I don't know about you, but I not only like being told I'm wrong, I need to be told I'm wrong, even if it pisses me off. I know I'll get over it once I calm down.

Comments are motivation.

A blogger who receives a lot of comments on a particular post/article is motivated by those comments. What kind of motivation am I talking about? The kind that makes a blogger want to improve. The kind that makes a blogger want to keep writing. The kind that makes a blogger keep going.

As one of my frequent contacts (Hari) mentioned to me, all of this one-sidedness is starting to make some bloggers bitter. They're taking the time to comment frequently on other blogs but that effort isn't being reciprocated by but a fraction of those other bloggers. This tells me that we're not doing a good enough job. We harp about getting more traffic to our blogs and we won't even take the time to do something basic that actually drives traffic.

The "Comment King (or Queen) Award".

For those of you who are willing to participate, I'm starting a comment contest as of right now. Make a comment on a blog you read (but not as the sole comment — just as an aside or something) and let the blogger know about the contest. I'll create the image or have one of my more graphically-oriented online friends do it for me.

You, as the blog author of your own blog, need to count how many comments per commenter you receive. Every week, ending in Saturday, send me the name, URL, and comment count of the person who commented on your blog the most (ties are okay). I will pick a weekly winner from all the submissions.

Needless to say, while I'll be participating myself, I won't by vying for the award. If no one else participates, I won't have a much of a list to pick a winner from, will I?

The [GAS] Ultimate 'How to' Contest

Are you geeky enough to win a portion of more than $1,300 in cash and prizes? I received a personal invitation from Kiltak of [Geeks Are Sexy] Technology News to participate in a group writing project contest, but it's open to anyone who wants to join in.

The prizes, details and rules are all displayed in the article, The [GAS] ultimate “How To” contest – More than $1300 in prizes!, so I'm just going to repeat the details:

To participate in the contest, you’ll need to write and submit a new “How To” article to be published on your own site. If you do not have a place to publish your article, we will gladly do it for you. Your article must be unique, meaning that it can’t have been previously written or published. Please also consider linking back to this post to let your readers know you’re participating.

This “How To” must be geeky. Anything related to technology, gadgets, graphic editing, gaming, software, hardware, blogging, and computer security is fine.

The contest starts today. We’ll give you a month to write your articles, and then we’ll select six random winners.

Plus, if you’ve got a blog of your own and choose to blog about the event, you’ll get an extra chance at winning. Just be sure to read the rules carefully before submitting your entry.

The article was written on September 27th and the contest ends at the end of October. That's plenty of time to get your geek on.
