Make Money Online — Using Chitika and Infolinks

Even if you want to use AdSense to make money online, it isn't always possible, even if you're in good standing with Google. While Chitika doesn't have the ad inventory that AdSense does, it could be a better match for your website. I'm talking about advertising publishing using banner ads, obviously. It's also obvious that banner advertising isn't the only advertising publishing option available.

When and how to use Chitika

In my experience, Chitika works well with a product-oriented website and not so well otherwise. Also, in my experience, it doesn't pay as well as AdSense when covering the same subjects. You can still make money online with it and you shouldn't ignore it, especially if you can't use AdSense.

Chitika has all kinds of banner ad sizes available, much more than that available with AdSense. In my opinion, optimizing should be done just like optimizing with AdSense. After all, banner ads are banner ads.

There are other banner advertisers besides AdSense and Chitika, but I've yet to find one that pays better than these.

When and how to use Infolinks

Some people swear by Kontera for text link ads, but I've used both Kontera and Infolinks and Infolinks is way better, in my opinion. Both work in pretty much the same way, but I find Infolinks much easier to work with and it pays consistently better. There are other text link advertisers out there, but my experience with them has been extremely limited, so I won't write about them.

Infolinks creates links, using JavaScript, which produce pop-ups when someone hovers on them. When that someone clicks on a pop-up, you make money. Infolinks can create up to 12 in-text links, if I remember correctly, and they're not always as spaced out as I would like. The one think I like to do is to create internal links as close to the top of the content as possible in order to force the automatically generated links to appear lower in the content. I'm not always successful in either case, internal links placement or pushing Infolinks down.

I've heard people complain about the appearance of the in-text links, but it's usually from the publishers themselves (like me). Wikipedia has a heck of a lot more in-text (internal links) per page than any other site I've ever seen and yet it doesn't appear to affect their page views.

If you're going to use Infolinks, use the advanced options and match your own link colors and use a single underline vs. the double-underline. The default display is probably what causes so much consternation with publishers. In my opinion, there really isn't a reason not to use Infolinks.

Using more than one Advertising Service

There isn't a problem with using either of these alongside AdSense or alongside each other. The in-text links have no bearing on Google's page layout algorithm (or filter), so it shouldn't worry you. You just need to make sure you have a lot of text above the fold (using Chrome at the 1024×768 resolution).

You should always put what pays the best in your primary location. In my case, it's AdSense at the right shoulder location of the main content. Putting other banner ads nearby may cause cannibalization – the lower paying ads drawing more clicks than the higher paying ones.

Less is sometimes more and that's why AdSense limits you to three ads per page. Your visitors are more likely to click away than to click ads if you overdo it.

Hey, this is Tammy from Infolinks. I really enjoyed reading this great review of our In-Text ads. I noticed your concern about where your Infolinks ads appear. You should utilize our ON/OFF tags to further control where they appear. Read more here: http://blog.infolinks.com/2009/11/17/turn-me-on-%E2%80%93-turn-me-off/

    Happy blogging,

      Hi Tammy,

I don't have an issue but others do. On/off doesn't always work for automated content display — I wrote my own plugin.

Hey RT, what happened to your subscribe to comments plugin?

Also do you make any money from chitika? I tried it and it's just plain pathetic lmao. My infolinks makes roughly $3-4/day (3 sites), my adsense makes $24+/day(3sites), I tried replacing adsense for chitika on all 3 sites and it made as much as infolinks or like a dollar more. People who started calling it shitika were right haha.

I had to remove the plugin because it was producing some errors I couldn't find a fix for. It's a really old plugin and in dire need of an update.

As for Chitika, it doesn't make much on sites that aren't product oriented. I use it on non-AdSense pages but that's about it.

I have just recently started using InfoLinks (within the past week). And, it seems to be okay so far. I do hope it starts showing more ads, though, as my page views per day is close to 10,000 and the InfoLinks service only shows 2,500 impressions. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Also, I have been banned from AdSense (they claimed click fraud???). I have appealed and it did not work. Does anyone know of a way to get AdSense reinstated? Or, are there any other good alternatives to AdSense for banner and/or text links in ad spaces (instead of inline like InfoLinks)? Chitika is mentioned here, but I have read nothing but bad things about this service.

Lastly, I have heard from a few people that Text Link Ads pays better (higher per click) than InfoLinks. Does anyone here have any experience with Text Link Ads?

    Thank you.

Text Link Ads will get your rankings slammed because they're obvious paid links. There is another post where I linked to a site which has a huge list of alternatives, but I think adBrite may be what you're looking for.

      • Brian Douglas says:

Really? Using infolinks will hurt my natural search engine rankings? I can certainly see where this would be the case, as you state, they are obvious paid links.

Mind if I ask why you use them on your site? Is it worth the money you're making to potentially hurt your search engine rankings?

        Thanks!

You misunderstand. Infolinks are not text link ads. The comments above are about text link ad services that simply embed links.

I am looking forward to try out both chitika and infolinlks. The problem with me is that most of my visitors are not from US.
