It’s estimated by VocalTec that over 15 million people have already purchased the original MagicJack device. With the MagicJack Plus due to be released in a few short months, many people are now wondering how the MagicJack Plus improves the design of the original MagicJack. Interestingly enough, the new MagicJack Plus only costs $10 more than the original model, and has several noticeable (and much needed) improvements. Here are a few of the differences between the MagicJack Plus and the original MagicJack< device.
New Price
The original MagicJack was priced at around $40.00, and came with a year of free telephone service. The MagicJack Plus also comes with a year of free telephone service, though is priced at $50.00. The cost of telephone service after the initial year of service is apparently $19.95 per year, which is the same as was the price for the old magicJack. Though this hasn’t been confirmed, it’s assumed by most consumers that the international calling rates for the MagicJack Plus will be the same as the original MagicJack (usually from $0.08 – $0.40 per minute, depending on country).
No Computer Required
The previous version of the MagicJack was a USB device that plugged in to a computer. Once plugged in, the original MagicJack worked with software installed on the PC in order to make a call. This has completely changed with the MagicJack Plus. The MagicJack Plus is able to make calls without being connected to a PC, which is the feature that many consumers are most excited about.
On-Board CPU
The main upgrade of the MagicJack Plus (over the original Magic Jack) is the fact that the MagicJack Plus includes an on-board CPU. This is why the MagicJack Plus is able to work as a stand-alone device, and why it doesn’t need to be connected to a computer in order to make calls. Having an on-board CPU makes the MagicJack Plus so much better than the original magic Jack because it eliminates the need to include another device that can cause complications.
Works with Wi-Fi
The original MagicJack Device could only work by being plugged into a PC that was connected to the internet. This meant that if a consumer didn’t have a PC (or didn’t want to install the MagicJack software), they weren’t able to use the MagicJack device. With the MagicJack Plus, the device works without a PC, instead using an existing Wi-Fi connection. This means that you can hook the new magicJack directly into your current landline telephone and you will be up and running in just a few seconds.
This is certainly quite cool … Not something that I need because I’m a GoogleTalk/Voice kinda guy. But that not needing a PC thing certainly has me thinking about people that I might recommend it to.
This is awsome i have an original magic jack and I love it. A few minor issues but generally not a big deal. I’m glad there are making a plus version im definately getting one! I’m passing this on to many people i know who would benefit from the plus.
I have the first generation Magic Jack. Can I upgrade and keep the same number?
Nick
I’ve used voip phone systems in the past and recently tried the new Magic Jack Plus online to see what the quality difference is. It’s nice that you don’t need an external part and can just use your computer. I need to test a few more times before determining which I like better.
hi:
How can u try MJ plus on line? And does anyone know when it’ll be available?
I am wondering if the new MJ + can fax like the first generation does?
MagicJack

We don’t sell the product. This is only an information article.
That’s funny ! :-)
I have an original Magic Jack that I use with my computer and portable phone at this time. I have Wifi at home – but only this portable phone – can I use this new Majic Jack Plus with my router and my Wifi without having a land line for my phone?
i was waiting to know more about the magic jack plus, some time this week i contact customer service live chat cause i need it to renew my contract and i asked them about the magic jack plus and they say is 69.99 or something like that and they give me a number to order it!!!!!!
it is a lot more expensive of the price it was supposed to be, lets hope it worth it…….
i live the number here. let hope it works cause i haven’t call jet.
the number is :1-800-509-1709.
so is out already , o yeah and it appears on the official page to:
http://www.magicjack.com/
so hope all you enjoy the info and if some of you buy it don’t forget to let us know more about it!!!!
I just wanted to clear up one thing in the article that was wrong. It says that it now works with wi-fi and can be hooked up to power and your phone only. This is not true, I just talked to customer support and the options are1. Hooked directly to your computer via USB, the computer can be hardwired or wireless / wi-fi. 2. Hooked directly into your modem/router and power supply. This created a problem for me because I didn’t want to hook it into my computer, and I don’t have spare router spaces. I was hoping I could hook the phone up, and the power supply and it would connect via wi-fi to the internet, this won’t work.
Tried to take advantage of the free trial offer and purchase the five year service plan for $99.00. The total came up to $189.99. how so??? Didn’t complete order needless to say. I am being told that it doesn’t work by merely plugging into a receptacle??
If you have Magic Jack with 5year plan and want to buy M+, you can transfer your old number number to M+ but you 5 year plan will not transfer to new M+.
sounds like it works the same as Net Talk , i had Magic Jack and hated it. only local calls were clear. sold it and switched to Net Talk and couldnt be happier , never had the dreaded slow motion voice modulation with it . its awsome and only $30 a year. I am a Net Talk fan . works flawlessly. and no computer needed.
I have old Majic jack and pay for 5 years i can make update por MJ plus with same number and years?
My name is Sixto Morales, I have been an MJ customer for two years and feel very satisfied. I have 5 years contract and will get the new one.
So, what is the answer? I I have the same question. I bought new mj plus and I want to keep an old number. It should be the way to transfer the number, but there is no customer service to call and ask. I do not want new number– there are too many people and places to inform about changes.
About keeping an old number– they give you an option to keep old number when you register new mj plus.
They do not say anything about my prepayed years for my old mj.
I wonder : can I still use my old mj on the go?
Nice information! it was first released in late 2007, MagicJack has become exceedingly popular, with consumers seeking new ways to save money during these difficult economic times. The company has reportedly sold 7 million units to date. Both sales and interest in the product continue to be very strong.
I love how the MagicJack Plus doesn’t require a PC to use. This makes it just ten times more convenient. Totally worth the extra ten dollar.
i have the original majic jack and it works well with computor. yhe plus which i recieved recently does not work without computor as per ads and for a help line i need to register and pay extra 38,00 dollars .This is a rip off
I have thought about getting the Magicjack i didnt even know they had a new one coming out great article.
Very nice review on the MagicJack Plus.
I like very much too that it doesn’t require a PC to use. This on-board CPU that has is so useful, and makes it so much better than the original magic Jack.
i have used magic jack for over 2 years and am very happy with it. what type router do i need to get in order to use the plus model?
I would like to know if you may keep your landline phone number with the new magicjack or magicjack 2. This would certainly insure my purchase of many magicjack 2 devices for myself and friends and famiies. Please respond asap thank you
I tried MJ plus and got so frustrated I sent it backi. The cost is $69.00 and if you want a “real tel no. it’ll cost you another $10.00 I also found the setup on the computer to be lacking. I spent over an hour with live chat to fix numerous concerns and finally got an RMA. Did it work? I was unable to call my home phone. The MJ default number starts and ends with an * and the number itself is a joke, Anyone calling the default number must first dial an access number, wait for authorization, then dial the MJ 12 digit number starting and ending with an *.
I own two regular magic jacks and they work as advertised..never had an issue with them, one of them is being used overseas and it does the job.. for 19$ a year? hell yea!
I recently ordered the Magic Jack plus and I am waiting for it to come, I will use a new number which I have to pay 10$ extra ( I don’t mind that) .. I will post an update once I get it, I also tried their iPhone application on my unlock iphone 4s and Jailbreak iPhone 4s IOS 5.1 and it worked great, as I heard in some countries they block the application and also the magic jack so check if the country allows using the voip services before spending your money..
how has it worked for you without the computer? Thinking of getting my mom one. Thanks!

Need help. Quite confused.
1. Can I buy one MajicPlus and use for another extension line? have several phone extension lines in the living room. Or must I buy several magic jack plus for each phone extension line in the house? I just want one number for the house for two to three land lines. I have a lot of phone lines to use as extensions.
2. I have a fax line aside from my llandline with ATT. What should I do if I drop att and switch to magic jack plus? Will I need to buy an extra magic jack just for fax line? Is it worth it than sticking with my provider offering two lines (landline & fax)
3. @Erik – When you mean WIFI BRIDGE- does this allow you to have direct connection from a modem when you use the ethernet of MJP connected with the wifi bridge? I am confused with this idea you have and I find it interesting if it is a good option than having to connect with WIFI that is located far which causes slow download speed.. will a wifi bridge make my internet fast as to connecting to wifi from a different room far away from where my PC is? I don’t know if this is necessary so i can have a direct ethernet plugged to my pc than rely on wifi which loads slower because it is far from the small office where I have my modem/wifi plugged .
Any help would be very much appreciated. Sorry if some of these questions have been answered. I am just getting confused.
Thank you.
Hello,
I need help. O Friday November 11,we ordered a Magic Jack Plus for a frien. We gave all the informatio including Visa number. But we wrote the e-mamil address wron so she never recieved a confirmation number. WHAT DO WE DO? There are no phone numbers that we could call to correct this and I just found this. Could someone from Mgic Jack PLEASE e-mail me so that we could clarify this matter ASAP.
Waiting upon you call!
With Regards
where can I buy a magic jack plus, also can I use my same landline phone number? Thank you
I saw magic jack plus being sold at radio shack. is this true. thank you
ida. My daughter set my magicJack Plus up today. I paid $20.95 (inc tax) to have my old phone number ported from AT&T to magicJack. The confirmation email says it may take up to 10 business days for the change to happen. In the registration process, a temporary phone number has been assigned to me. So far, so good. You DO NOT cancel your land line service. magicJack will notify you when your number is ported to them. You will receive information at that time if you need to do anything with your old phone company. Right now I make calls with my pc by plugging the landline into the magicJack Plus, and then inserting the magicJack Plus into the same USB port I used when registering with magicJack. I am waiting until my old phone number is ported before I set up my system for non pc use.
Hope this helps. God bless judyl
I have been a magic jack user for a couple years now. I just switched over to the newest one that you do not leave your computer on, and you can just plug it into your wireless network.
I will say that I am very pleased with it. It has a couple draw backs, but I can live with it for the price. Way better than $600 a year for a land line!
It does work plugged into your wireless or wired router with an Ethernet cable – that does not make it wireless or mean it works as a wifi device! It can also be used plugged into your pc via the usb connection. So your choices are – cat5 aka Ethernet cable into your router or usb connection into your computer. The MJ Plus is also going for 69.99 on the Magic Jack site. It also doesn’t appear any credit etc. can be used toward the Plus version from the old version. Therefore, if you purchased 5yrs of subscription on the old one and you would like a new one it won’t help you with the new one’s subscription or service. :-( Personally, I think not even offering you a credit towards the upgraded one when you have already purchased 5yrs of service with the old one is a bit scammyish.. One should also think real hard before buying 5yrs of service with the new one as if this is their method, it will surely happen again. Sucks to have paid for service you won’ t be able to use because it can’t be applied or credited toward the upgraded device. :-(
I ordered your “Trial period” Magic Jack that wasn’t supposed to charge me for 30 days & you guys took the money the same day! I don’t care now if it works or doesn’t work, YOU LIED! I want my money RETURNED now!!!
You should address your rage at the makers of magicJack. We are not affiliated with them.
I never know this actually, a Magic Jack, well, where can we buy this one? Is it available in any stores worldwide and online?
I’m sure it can be ordered online, but it has to be used in conjunction with a US-based phone number.
I have had magicjack since they came out… they have been great. The only thing is, I can’t cancel my voicemail…that’s a problem for me. I don’t want voicemail to answer any calls…I would prefer to let the phone ring, but with magicjack I don’t have that option. I really want to know would I have that option with this new one?….
I bought the regular original magic jack a couple months ago. Sometimes it works great, then sometimes people cannot hear me, like losing the signal on a cell phone. I had a friend just tell me today that everybody has been having this same problem. He also said that they had this new m j plus out now that eliminated this problem by not plugging into the pc, but by plugging right into the wall,no more lost calls.I bought mine at Radio Shack. Do you think I should take mine back to R S or just call up M J to try to get a upgrade to the Plus? Thanks ahead of time for any response.
I had the Magic Jack for a while now and I have no issue with it what so every. I like the new stand alone feature that it has to offer but I really don’t like the price. I think I will stick with my old Magic Jack cause its being working fine and hasn’t fail me yet.
I had bought the original magicjack 3 year plan before they came out with the no-computer version. Just spoke Irvion at Magicjack who refused to upgrade me. I have to purchase a brand new unit and a new plan. They will not transfer your old plan. I would not recommend buying more that a 1 year plan since you never know when an update will come out that you cannoty upgrade to. After 3 years I may chnage to something else since Majicjack is not being fair to their clients.
I totally agree with you, I am very disappointed in them too. They tell me that their promotion ended two weeks ago.
CREAR UN DEPARTAMENTO DE ESPANOL Y DE CONECCIONES CON TEFEFONO, LAS 24 HORAS AL DIAS, PUES CADA PAIS TIENE UN USO HORARIO DISTINTO, Gracias.
I have used both the old and new majic jack. With old one did not have any problem and saved me a lot of money. The new majic jack has problem going offline very often for no reason. I do not know if there is a fix for this or not. I usually unplug power and plug back in and starts working for a day or so. sound quality is not as good with the new mj.
I tried the version that is before this one and has served me a lot. I will definitely try this new model as its more portable and convenient than the previous one. Thanks for sharing the features of the new model. I am not so sure with it being unfair to their clients though. Haven’t experienced something like that.
how does magicjack plus works with cable internet provider and without the computer using cable internet
Can you have dial-up with the Magic Jack Plus?
Donald V. Walker

Ummm if u have dial up why would u need a magic jack a magic jack is for home phone dial up is already a land line?????
I’ve been to the Philippines 16 times and if I could live there permanently, I would. When I lived there for a year in 07-08, I brought a “Vontastic Box” with me (VOIP) and it worked great. Now I use skype but I also have a MJ. I like the newest version because I don’t have to have the computer on for it to work 24/7. The older version is ok as long as I am at the keyboard but when I’m doing things around the house, no go. I plan to buy another one of the new version and send it back to the PI for my relatives.
I purchased the new MagicJack Plus 3 months ago. Followed the easy to install instructions. Has worked great. No problems. The feature I like best is when I receive a call I let it go to voice mail. MagicJack Plus then sends me a email with the voice message. I never have to leave my computer. Just open the email and play the message. I use my MagicJack Plus like a land line. I plug it into the back of my wireless router and plug a regular phone into the MagicJack Plus. Works Great!
I’ve been using magic jack for more than 2 years and been working 97% of the time. It was a gift from relatives in the US and I think they use a more advanced version there.
I recommend magic jack (i do not work for them)
what router can I use with MJ+…I have LINKSYS WRT54G which I bought in 2006….and the problem is that the MJ+ is not? being recognized…pls respond:)
Its Awesome Device. I’m Using Already!! I Can Eaisly Call To USA & CANADA Free Call :) Thanks for posting, its Helpful for others :)
Back in 2010 I paid for 5 years in full when I bought the original magic jack. I had not used it for a while since about a week ago. My dad was getting poor reception on his cell phone at his house. I told him that I had magic jack and he could use it. Come to find out, this company had no record of me paying for 5 years in full when I tried to reactivate the device. I was so furious. I had saved the email confirmation when I first purchased the product. However the email had no transaction id so the representative could not track my payment and there was not way I was going to looking back 2 years on my credit card transaction history. After going back and forth with the representative nothing was ever resolved finally my connection to live chat was disconnected. Make sure you keep all the records and order numbers when buying this product. Especially if you gonna pay for three or five years in advance.
I have successfully used the magicjack, so I bought the mjPlus. I have it connected to the AT&T router. It works great then it stops working. I usually get “check your internet connection error 12?. This last time, I got a continous beep beep beep, non-stop. I troubleshoot with At&T and magic jack tech support. We made changes to the At&T router settings. After hours spent, I gave up and now 2 days later, coming back to fix it or get rid of mjPlus or At&T, it is working again. All on its own. I use the both magic jacks, one to the computer and the mjPlus to the router. Is that causing it. Is it the latency issue mentioned above. The AT&T router is a g versus n router. I have 10 g signal. Any advise would be great.
Wow, the device really has gone through several developments. It is definitely more attractive now, especially that it promotes more convenience. MajicJackplus being independent from a computer device is a huge development.
If the new magic jack has been improved so much with such a small price increase I might have to consider getting one. I love the fact that it’s now an independent device.
Wow! That seems to be really nice! I really like the feature that it doesn’t need to connect to a computer. And it works with Wifi! I think I should purchase it as soon as possible!
Its great that magicJack PLUS no longer needs to be plugged into a PC for it to work. Now you can just plug it into a router or broadband modem and make cheap calls. The call waiting and call forwarding are also great features and the call quality is satisfactory
Thanks for your information, although this hasn’t been confirmed, it’s assumed by most consumers that the international calling rates for the MagicJack Plus will be the same as the original MagicJack (usually from $0.08 – $0.40 per minute, depending on country).
Thanks for this information. I´m interested for this MagicJack Plus. Really golden advices!
