Who needs a Guard dog? I have a Guard Cat!

guard cat I may not be interested in observing cats, but sometimes they do things that make you wonder if they're not some other kind of animal in disguise. Such is the case concerning our "cat with no name" (I just call him "Cat"). This cat adopted the people living in our compound, not the other way around.

A Ferocious Cat

Unlike the other cats that run in and out of our compound as quickly as possible, seemingly afraid of anything that moves, "Cat" just lays on the cement flooring between the houses and chills out, waiting for something to happen.

relaxed cat

When something happens that this cat thinks he needs to get involved in, he will spring into action. The cat fights I've been hearing at night have all but ceased to occur because this cat was beating up the stray cats that entered the compound and they no longer come into the compound at night. I've seen some of the wounds on the stray cats (during the daytime, just outside the compound) and they're definitely not pretty.

What I find extremely interesting is that the "cat with no name" will also beat up on stray dogs. My in-laws have some bad habits, one of which is leaving the gate to the compound open until late at night. They're sitting in their homes, watching TV or sleeping and the compound is not secure. This is when the stray dogs come in and root around for food or anything they think is food.

A few days ago, I was looking out an upstairs bedroom window and I saw the cat chase a dog out of the compound. The dog was at least three times the size of the cat. Last night, while I was eating dinner, I heard a dog yelping in the compound. I looked outside and saw this cat standing at the bottom of the steps that lead into the compound. That same dog was standing outside the gate and looking in. After a minute or two, the dog turned and walked away.

An Affectionate Cat

If I didn't know what cats eat, I wouldn't expect this cat to hang around. Not only does he hang around, but he has a wife and two kids hanging around now. Houston, we may have a problem later on.

Sometimes I find myself sitting and shooting the breeze with relatives and neighbors in front of my mother-in-law's sari-sari store, which is just outside the compound. This cat will come out of the compound to mingle with us. I learned the hard way not to show any affection for the cat, or there would be consequences.

This cat has some extremely long claws. Once I reached down and petted the cat and the next thing you know, he was trying to climb up on me. I ended up throwing away the custom printed t-shirt I was wearing because of the holes he created with those claws.

The Cat is not a Pet

I want to be clear on this. This is not a pet cat. He doesn't belong to anyone and that's why he doesn't have a name. We belong to him.

I don't mind having the cat around. I don't feed him (no one does). He eats fish, chicken and pork scraps, snakes and insects. He doesn't even meow for food anymore because he also eats rice. If he wants to guard the compound as his private territory, more power to him.
