A little over a week ago, I pointed out where I would go if I wanted to know what the best beers are. I also mentioned that I wouldn't be able to find most of the beers reviewed locally. I know I'm right, but there are actually some good beers available here and I found them at the Royal Subic store at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Actually, I didn't find them. I have tunnel vision when I shop and never see anything I'm NOT looking for. My wife, on the other hand…
Slavering for Good Beer
Ever since I watched Allyn's video review of Sam Adams Boston Lager, I've been fiending for a good beer or two. I told my wife about it.
You see, the last time I had a "good" beer was in 2000, it's been that long. The last time I had a Sam Adams was… never. In either 1997 or 1998, I was told that it "sucked" by a Corona drinker. I found it hard to believe, based on its popularity, but I had no desire to experiment back then. I had a Guinness draft at the Dublin, Ireland airport in 1991, so I knew that Corona (and other cheap beer) drinkers wouldn't like the stronger taste of something like Sam Adams.
Imported Beer
Imported beer for me might not be imported beer for you. Here, Sam Adams is an imported beer. My wife and I stopped at the Royal Subic yesterday morning to quickly get some needed things for a wedding reception on Saturday. My wife spotted the imported beer section. I don't think there was such a section before the store was remodeled earlier this year but then again, I wasn't looking for it.
I not only found Samuel Adams Boston Lager there, but I also found a few others. Damned if I can remember all the names because I didn't have anything to write them down on at the time. I remember seeing Becks, two kinds of Guinness, and then memory fails.
I bought two bottles of the Sam Adams just to get a taste. I can never get a buzz from just two bottles of anything with less than 12 percent alcohol, so I knew I was safe. Each bottle was USD $1.45 and I wonder how much they cost in the US.
I have a beer mug that was given to me three years ago and I poured the beer into it. I finished both bottles in under an hour. I was really surprised at how good it tastes, a far cry from San Miguel anything and three times as expensive, but well worth it.
Taste Testing
I'll be picking up a couple of the other beers I saw each time I'm at the store, which is usually only once or twice a month, and taste testing them as well. In the meantime, I think I'll pick up a case of Sam Adams on the next run and keep it stocked for the next party, after the wedding reception on Saturday (I'll be drinking rum and coke for that one).
I don't drink beer for the alcohol and I never did. If it doesn't taste good, why bother? With good beer, I can enjoy the taste without getting drunk off of it and that suits me just fine.

Microbreweries are just starting to gain market share here in Australia and this has brought a lot of nice beers to try out. I usually try something different once a month or so. I really like the radler type beers at the moment. But still missing my Labatt Bleue back from when I lived in Quebec.

Anything that is not too watery. I like a beer with character and substance.

Sam Adams is one of my favorite "easy drinking" beers, but was surpassed a long time ago by "Fat Tire" which is a fantastic Amber Ale. If you favor the watery lagers like Coors, then you most likely won't like either beer.
Guinness is an acquired taste; initially it feels like a globule of phlegm making its way down your throat but after overcoming this initial image you'll find you can drink glass after glass. A clean drink, doesn't leave you in a hopelessly drunken state and not a bad hangover. Cead mile failte ('a hundred thousand welcomes' in Irish.).
