The lines between blog coaching, blog consulting and blog mentoring are blurred by the fact that the differences are subtle. While I, personally, have no desire to be on the giving or receiving end of any blog related services, there are many people who will attempt to make money online from one of those angles or both. Only a few will be successful.
Blog Operation
There is so much more to operating a blog than just blog writing after you've already selected a domain name, a web hosting service and the blog software. I don't think I could describe EVERYTHING, even if I tried my best.
Nothing in the "blogosphere" is automatic. Well, some of it can be, but you have to set it up that way to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, the best blogging software is WordPress because it includes at least one automatic feature out of the box and that feature is pinging RSS feed publication services. That's not the only reason I consider it the best, but I don't want to digress from the main reason behind this article.
You can do everything you need to do with a blog even if it happens to be a free blog on one of the free blog services (like Blogger or the dot com version of WordPress). A blog site doesn't even have to be dedicated to being just a blog and can be integrated as part of another CMS platform. The latest version of WordPress itself can be built in such a way as to present a content management system with the blog part being a subset of that system.
Blog Related Services
There are very few people I would recommend listening to when it comes to blog coaching and blog consulting. Michael Martine of RemarkaBlogger is one of them. He is a person who truly understands that blogging isn't just about posting random items to a blog, especially when it comes to making money online.
Blog consultants aren't worth their salt if they don't cover the search engine optimization aspects of blogging along with the social networking aspects. Not only that, but any advice against focusing on a particular subject or "niche" is the wrong advice. This blog, my blog, is the wrong kind of blog to start out with because IT ISN'T FOCUSED on any one subject. It's only through perseverance and dumb luck that I've turned it into more than a personal blog, garnering more search and social traffic than a personal blog could normally do on its own.
Blog Mentoring
Blog mentoring is more than blog coaching and more than blog consulting. It's walking a person step-by-step from beginning to success. It requires a lot more patience than I could ever possess. Some people end up being blog mentors without even knowing it – at least until they realize how much of their time is being eaten up by it.
Due to the time requirements, professional blog mentoring isn't cheap. Professional blog mentors can charge "dollars per hour" and I doubt those dollars are fewer than 10 in any case.
The Non-Technically Inclined
The whole reason for the existence of blog related services is because there are a lot of people who aren't technically inclined enough to operate a blog without assistance. Then there are people who will just throw up a blog anywhere, without knowing the technical details behind it, and expect to be making money online within a month. It just doesn't work that way.
There are blog services for the truly gullible as well as blog services for those who can discern facts from fiction. There are people professing to be experts in the field who are nothing more than con artists out to get your hard-earned dollars. Luckily, they don't last very long. You can usually search for their names or domain names through Google and find out what kind of reputation they really have.
If your blogging goal is simply to be social, then have it and don't pay attention to anything I've written. If, however, you discover that you want to make money online with a blog, I suggest you read a lot MORE than I've written before jumping in with both feet.
