If there was ever one day of the year I used to look forward to, it had to be "Black Friday" in the US. I'm talking about the day after Thanksgiving Day, not the other days called "Black Friday" around the world. Of course, since I'm no longer in the US, I can't look forward to it, now can I?
What is Black Friday?
Well, the "Black Friday" I'm talking about happens to be the biggest shopping day of the year in the US. It's the day immediately following Thanksgiving Day and it kicks off the Christmas holiday shopping season. In past years, more sales were generated on this single day than on any other single day of the year.
According to the news reports that I've read from various sources since September, the economic recession has eased off and a recovery is in full swing, even if the recovery is happening slower than anyone would like.
It should be interesting to read the news reports when the sales tallies are added up for the Black Friday of this year. I suspect we won't get the full picture until sometime in January.
Anyway… despite the doom and gloom and the jobless count, sales on technology items should be brisk. From what I've seen, the tech sector is what has been keeping the economy afloat throughout the recession. It certainly had nothing to do with any stupid government stimulus package (we all know the effects of those don't even kick in until a year or more later).
Well, at least I have my turkey.
I may not be able to partake in any of the US-based sales events from my location, but at least I can enjoy Thanksgiving Day itself. I just bought two huge turkeys along with all kinds of other fixings. I plan to be fat, dumb and happy by the time Black Friday starts in the US.
I'll probably be intoxicated, or at least hung over, after I partake in some alcohol abuse after the Thanksgiving Day dinner. It's not my intention but one of my brothers-in-law, "June", is holding off on his 39th birthday (which is today) celebration and hoping to get me drunk at that time instead (which happens to be two days before my 49th birthday). Yes, he is almost exactly 10 years younger than I am and met him for the first time when he was 15 years old. Damn, I feel like I'm getting old.
