There are a number of advantages of booking your accommodation through a travel agent you know well. They have the relationships with the hotels and airlines just like any other business, but more importantly, they are someone you can complain to if you have a problem with your hotel. Unfortunately, there are not too many of the traditional travel agents left in our world. Travel agents that still do exist are ones that have moved online. The cheapest travel websites offering the best deals on hotels will offer just about not assistance at all. Online travel agents will offer a minimal amount of help, and that could take some time. So if you have made your booking online, and your hotel and hotel room are nothing like is promised, what can you do about it when you arrive?
- Letting Everyone Know. We all know there are enough social networking sites to let everyone in the world know how awful the room was, how much you were ripped off and how much trouble you experienced. This is something you will definitely do, but this will not fix your immediate problem.
- Ask for a Change of Room or Refund. If a hotel is providing a room that is of much lower standard than what was promised online, there is little chance they will accept giving you a refund. That doesn't mean you should not ask. There is little point getting angry, as this will never help your situation. Always ask for the manager or highest person in charge at the time. You have a couple of options. The first is to ask for another room in the hotel that you feel satisfied with. The other is to leave the hotel and look for somewhere else. The only person who will have the power to help you to do either of these, is the manager in charge. It is easy to see in hindsight that you should have looked at the room before you checked in. That is too late. And now you are committed. If there is another room in the hotel, they are willing to give you, then it will be the easiest way to solve your problem. The second option will be a little difficult. In most cases, where a hotel room is absolutely nothing like what was promised, there is little chance another room in the hotel will suffice. Your only option will be to find another hotel.
- Contacting Your Bank or Payment Provider. Visa and other payment systems are designed for just such situations. PayPal is also designed for such situations. If you are not going to stay in the hotel, and you have decided to find somewhere else to stay. There is little you can do about the payment for now. Having the hotel refund the payment will still take some time. If the hotel is willing to make a refund so you can leave. Make sure you get that in writing. If they are not willing to make a refund, the same process is going to apply. Your only option is to contact your bank to reverse the payment or to contact your payment provider to do the same. You can only contact one of them, contacting both of them can make matters even more complicated. If you used a secure payment provider, it is best you go with them. If you used your bank card, without a payment system, you should deal directly with your bank.
- Your Chances. The chances are that you will get the refund to your bank, by your bank, or by your payment provider. Their systems are designed for just such a situation. If you have that written statement to provide the refund it is guaranteed. You can expect this process to take at least a month.
There are reasons why the best hotels have a brand name that you can trust. If you are shopping for accommodation online, you must go with a website that has a reputation, and a hotel name you know. Horror stories abound. We cannot always decide on accommodation based on price.

Yes,I guess there is a reason why some hotels have recognized names…of course, then you have to pay for their brand and service. Honestly, it never happened to me that I am not satisfied with the accomodation, as I always got the best possible for the money I invested. If I paid few, I didnt expect much. But, some criteria about hygiene has to be respected, of course. I agree it is important to ask for refund or change of room if the customer is not satisfied. After all, the customer is always right.

For years I allowed my friend, Kay, who is a travel agent book all of my vacations and I was always satisfied. Someone had remarked to me that it was unwise for me to spend as much money as I had on lodging because I never stay in the hotel room except to sleep. They said that 'I could probably stay in a dump and never know it'.
Unfortunately, I booked one trip on my own online and the hotel claimed that it was luxurious. Not! It was so awful that I rushed to leave my room shortly afer arising in the morning and intentionly returned near bedtime. I realized that it was important for me to enjoy my hotel room.
The hotel would not offer a refund; however, I blasted how unhappy I was all over the internet.

I agree on the Paypal scheme. It is a faster way to reconcile your transactions on the go. I will always go for the most recommended travel agency because they are most of the time talked about for a reason.
