Video Games Turned Into Movies
I don't know when video games started getting turned into movies because I've never been a video game fanatic. Of the video game movies that I've seen, the story is so much different than the video game story that I usually end up disliking it. That's not always the case, of course, or I'd never watch any. I'm going to briefly go over the video game movies I've seen. One that isn't a movie yet, that I'd like to see as much as the next version of the game, is "Duke Nukem". I saw a teaser title on IMDB and I'm thinking the release of the new game is pending the release of a movie.
Super Mario Bros. (1993)
I was disappointed in the movie, having played every version of the game on the NES and SNES systems. There wasn't much of story to the game to begin with, but the movie still didn't live up to it. I dislike the movie enough that it's just a vague memory now.
Wing Commander (1999)
Until someone recently pointed it out, I had no idea this was based on a video game. I don't remember the video game or the movie, although I've seen it once.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
I never played the video game although both of my sons did. I watched this one and the sequels and frankly, I'll never watch them again. It isn't the story that doesn't interest me, it's the actress. I wasn't impressed with Angelina Jolie. It's probably a tainted opinion since I saw her in "Gia (1998)". I didn't personally find her attractive.
Wait. The story doesn't interest me either. Lara Croft is just a souped up female version of Indiana Jones.
Resident Evil (2002)
The only reason I knew it started as a video game is because my younger son told me about it before the movie was released. Unlike me, he's a true video game fanatic, spending countless hours per week playing one form of video game or another.
I like the story of this one, another incarnation of all the "living dead" stories, because some of it's original. I wasn't impressed by the sequels, however, and I can skip any more sequels without thinking about it twice.
BloodRayne (2005)
Since it's a vampire flick, I had high hopes for this one. Never mind. Some of the acting was horrible and wooden. The straight-to-video sequel didn't have the same actress and didn't even pick up where the other story left off. Well, it kinda sorta did, but not the way I would have imagined.
Kristanna Loken did a great job as a tight-looking terminator in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)" and I have no clue what happened to her when she played the half-vampire in this movie. She looked and acted slutty (is that a word?). Anyway, it's another movie that I'll never watch twice.
Doom (2005)
Doom was one of the first of the very few PC video games I've played. I still have it stored on a CD somewhere and some day I may just remember where. A friend and I even tried out an updated, hacked version for network play over the Internet.
I found the movie interesting and even amusing at points, but it didn't completely follow the story of the video game (including the later editions of Doom). There was a bunch of stuff left out and a bunch of stuff added. At least there was a BFG in the movie. I don't know what BFG stands for, but I always thought it meant "big fucking gun". I could be wrong about that.
Hitman (2007)
I didn't know this had been made from a video game until I saw a reference to it on IMDB. It was good to watch once, but no more than that. There's just too much mindless mayhem for my personal tastes.
I'm sure there are some movies that I missed. Feel free to chime in – I'll add it to this list if you're positive it's a video game turned into a movie and not the other way around. There have been way too many video games created from movies for me to even try to list them all.

Silent Hill was a survival horror video game and the film of the same name was based on it.
There's a list of films based on games at Wikipedia by the way. Most of them are only of interest to anime fans though.

Thanks for pointing it out, I didn't think of looking there. Of course, only a few are live-action movies comparatively.
I disagree that they're *all* rubbish – but most are.
Pretty much *anything* by Uwe Boll is utter dross. There's even been a web petition to get him to stop making (destroying) films out of games http://www.stopuweboll.org/ which has over 350 THOUSAND signatures. According to that site, the *average* IMDB rating for his films is only 2.2!
Tomb Raider surprised me by not actually being utter rubbish. I was so used (conditioned?) to films based on games being rubbish that I was almost upset when it was actually not that bad! This was probably entirely because Uwe Boll was not involved. The sequel was a bit naff though :(
