VPS Hosting Problems and Dedicated Server Considerations
When I wrote about cheap web hosting and offered to host other domains for a reasonable price while being personally managed by me, there were no problems with my VPS web hosting. Over the last two or three weeks, I've been having memory issues with the server. The frequency of QoS (quality of service) alerts continued to increase so much that I considered moving to one of several dedicated servers.
Problem Solved
It took me a long time to find what was eating up all of the memory on the server. I don't want to go into all of it, but it turned out to be a WordPress caching plugin on one blog and an open_basedir error caused by a different plugin on another blog.
Since I have compression turned on at the server, any caching plugin that serves "gzipped" files seems to cause problems. Actually, I'm not sure if it's the compression factor or because I have server-side caching enabled as well. Whatever, this was extremely minor compared to the other issue.
I had no idea that open_basedir errors produced by open_basedir restrictions would consume memory so quickly and without releasing it. After I found the culprit responsible, I disabled it for 24 hours and then reenabled it for a few hours to be sure. I didn't want to be hasty in my thoughts of relief, but it turned out I was right.
Shared Hosting, VPS Hosting and Dedicated Servers
For the uninitiated, VPS hosting is a step-up from shared hosting and bit more expensive than a lot of people are willing to pay. Fortunately for me, my AdSense earnings more than cover it.
Shared hosting means that your website domain is but one of many on the same server, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. VPS hosting means that many less domains are shared on a VPS-dedicated machine. It's still not as good as dedicated hosting, but it's a whole lot better than shared hosting. You won't get shut down for the stupid reasons that shared hosting companies shut people down for.
Dedicated servers are the cream of the crop and the most expensive to go along with it. There are some dedicated hosting companies with good deals, but you have to be careful what you're actually getting for the amount of money you spend. I'm not sure, but I believe I will eventually move everything over to a dedicated server, if nothing more than to ensure my sites (and any sites I host) always have sufficient memory to work with.
Cheap Hosting From Me
I'm still offering the same deal. I don't see a problem with hosting several more sites for the same amount: $5.00 per month or $50.00 per year. It's a little more expensive than shared hosting costs, but it's a heck of a lot more reliable. Why is that? It's because I use the same server as everyone else, so it's in my best interest to keep everything running smoothly.
If you're interested, just send me a message using the contact form (in the upper navigation bar) and I'll see about getting you set up in short order. I already have two satisfied customers and it would please me to no end if I had a few more.

Glad to see you got it worked out, RT. Sorry about my contributions to the problem, though the fix for that was easy enough and made very little difference to me.
For anyone considering his offer, I'm very happy with his service all around. Not only the quality of the hosting but RT is very responsive to any questions and issues.

Just thought I would mention that I started out with dedicated servers many years ago and since then have worked with many VPS and shared hosts through my own customers. I agree, dedicated is the way to go but is more expensive.
I wanted to mention that even though VPS machines are less likely to have large numbers of domains they could still very well host a few design firms where they would have their own shared box within your system. Further, albeit rare, you could end up with several individual VPS hosts who share out their boxes as upper level share accounts.
I limit my domains to 50 per server and collocate mine in the town where I live, well close enough. That ensures that I can limit unnecessary traffic from any 1 domain and keep the speed superior throughout.

If you don't want the competition you can feel free to delete this post :-) … But I was so impressed with http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/ when I used them several years ago that I still can't get the wonderful experience out of my head.
The webhosting is $4 per month and all the extras like pop accounts, ftp accounts, and mySQL databases are unlimited (for the number you can get). You can even get a reseller account with them like I used to have.

However I will add that I haven't used them in about eight years so they could have changed :-)

Having your own webserver in the basement is the way to go. Buy domain names from registrars that have dynamic dns and point it to your internet IP
glad you worked it out.
i'm using a vps for now but really would love to get a dedicated box going.

More than a shared hosting, if your business is small then a vps hosting package will do, but if its a mission critical website then dedicated server is an ideal hosting solution for your business. In compare to shared and vps hosting, a dedicated server is much secured. Also, renting a managed dedicated server saves your time as the web hosting provider will manage your server monitoring issues and you will be able to focus on your core business.
