Why Do I Still Wear a Watch? It's Not Expensive (as in Croton Watches or Invicta Watches) but WHY??

watches I started wearing a watch regularly when I was in the military (1978-1998), but I just looked at my left wrist and realized that I no longer need to wear a watch. Unless I'm wearing a watch to appear stylish (by wearing something like the Croton and Invicta watches, and I'm not), there isn't a reason in the world for me to be wearing one and I'll explain why.

Time is of the Essence

The US military has strict rules about being at the appointed places of duty at the appointed time and date. Failure to be on time can result in punishments that include loss of rank and pay. It made sense for me to wear a watch back then.

Wearing a watch was not only important for being where I was supposed to be, it served as a tool.

The Clock is Ticking

A watch, more or less a small clock on your arm, serves purposes above and beyond what a watch was intentionally designed to do. Every watch I've ever worn has been digital because I needed the countdown timer as well as the chronograph. Wearing a chronograph watch allowed me to see how long it took me to run the 3-mile physical fitness course and continuously attempt to improve that time.

A countdown timer was something I felt was necessary as well. Part of the physical fitness test was to see how my sit-ups I could do in two minutes (changed to crunches a few short years before I retired). A countdown timer, especially one that would beep at 10 second intervals, allowed me to pace myself and not over exert myself until the last 10 seconds. It wouldn't matter after that and I could take my time to recover.

It's about Time!

I don't know what it is with people who wear watches as jewelry items instead of timepieces. My wife won't wear anything but non-digital watches and they have to be Citizen or Seiko watches, or watches with recognizable brand names that are synonymous with expensive women's watches.

I, on the other hand, have always been satisfied wearing Casio and Timex watches, and always digital. Men's watches don't have to be annoyingly expensive as far as most men are concerned. There are always exceptions, of course, but I'm not one of them.

A Watched Clock Never Chimes

I retired from the military in 1998, getting my final retirement certificate in 2008 (don't ask, because I don't feel like explaining). After working as a civilian from 1998 to 2006, I retired from the work force altogether and moved to the Philippines to live my pension.

I have no place that I have to be at any particular time, unless it's to catch flight to or from the country. In cases like that, it pays to be on time or early and I'm always early.

I'm wearing one of the cheapest watches you can buy in the US, an Armitron watch. It costs less than $10. I've been wearing the same one for more than a year and a half and it's still working with the original battery. It's time to stop wearing a watch. Why?

I have the time being displayed on a wall clock, on my computer display and on my television and I really only look at one of them when I'm not sure what time of day it is — I don't have to sleep or wake at any specific time of day and sometimes I get confused because of the dark clouds making daytime look like nighttime inside my house.

When the battery runs out of juice, I'm tossing this watch into the trash and I won't ever be wearing a watch again. It just isn't necessary and I think the only reason I've worn one up to now is out of habit.

RT, I bet you can do it. Stop wearing a watch on your wrist that is. I quit wearing a watch when I started carrying a cell phone. If I need to know what time it is the clock on my phone is always accurate and usually on my person whenever I'm in a situation where I might need to know the time. Next I need to get rid of the phone, but that’s a much bigger goal.

While I am not a fan of highly expensive designer watches, I do like a good analog watch with a solid metal strap and an attractive dial. It feels good to wear a manly watch.

Digital watches are OK, but I don't like the feel of rubber strap or plastic against my skin and most of the less expensive digital watches aren't made of metal.

I like Swiss watches in particular, because they are quite accurate. I wear a Swatch which I bought on a Switzerland visit some years ago, which runs well and serves me well. However, the glass cover is slightly chipped. Must have accidentally bumped it against a hard surface at some time. Thankfully it's not broken though.

That's interesting. Unlike you, I wear a watch to appear stylish :) There is a practical side to watch-wearing too – although I do have a clock in my mobile it is a pain to drag it out of the pocket each time I need to tell time. Cheap or expensive, I cannot see an end to watchmaking.

I wore a watch for years to tell time. Then I got a cell phone and a watch really seemed unnecessary I no longer need to do carry either. For some reason my internal clock is pretty accurate – usually within 10 minutes. Now I only wear watches as a fashion statement. Watches can be beautiful pieces of art – that happen to tell time.

I would have to agree with Amanda on watches as art, I wear a Cartier Tank Watch and despite it being a little boxy, it makes a statement about me and my unique sense of style. Nobody really NEEDS a watch these days, but we don't really NEED rings, earings or half the other stuff we buy at the mall, it's all about the statement!
