Homemade Laundry Detergent in the Philippines?
While I was casually surfing and checking out websites of my many friends, I came across an article called "Jabs Homemade Laundry Detergent". More than interesting, it shows that you can cut laundry detergent costs down to a fourth of what you spend on it now.
Bar Soap, Baking Soda and Borax
I have no problem getting two out of the three ingredients, but the borax is probably impossible. There are a lot of things I can probably find in Manila, but who wants to go to Manila to shop for household items? It's more trouble than it's worth, in my opinion.
It may not be obvious, but his recipe calls for "super washing soda". I seriously doubt I would be able to find that particular version of baking soda here and I'd have to do with regular baking soda.
Bar soap? No problem. I can find almost any brand. Ivory and Safeguard are all over place.
No Washing Machine
I don't have a washing machine yet, unless you count a sister-in-law. She pre-washes the heavily soiled laundry by hand and then uses an old Japanese-style washing machine to finish.
I'm patiently waiting for my other half to return from the US. I won't be buying an American-style washing machine and dryer until after she returns.
I'm investigating anything and everything that can cut down on costs, including homemade laundry detergent. Fabric softener brands are abundant and so are laundry detergent brands. Unfortunately, the local brands of the good stuff seem to be more expensive than the imported brands like Tide.
When Push Comes to Shove
Every time I see something I think would save me money, the problem is the getting the necessary ingredients or parts. In my opinion, the only advantage the US has over the Philippines is convenience. If you live in a large city, like I did (Phoenix), you can find almost anything you're looking for within a 50 mile radius. That just doesn't happen here.
There is a serious shortage of choices in the Philippines and laundry detergent (and laundry detergent components if you want to make it yourself) is one of them. I put myself in this position, pushed by circumstances beyond my control. Sometimes it feels like I was shoved, but that's another story.

Introducing the all new laundry detergent. Everything is a gimmick these days. You can now purchase laundry detergent in the form of dryer sheet so to speak….detergent, softner, and anti-static. Safe for all machine and HE compatible. I laugh when I go down the laundry detergent aisle at the super market as it like going down the cereal aisle…..how does one select *lol*.
Lol. Cool article. This might come in handy some day.
man, you live in Olongapo. That place ain't even a city city. It's not like theres target/walmart/costco type stores there like in the metro area.
You can keep the metro area. It sounds like you've never lived outside of it.
