Weight Lifting for Weight Loss?

early barbell Let's get one thing straight before I start rambling about weight loss by weight lifting (or any form of resistance training): "Weight lifting" is the not the same thing as "weightlifting" or "powerlifting".

The compound word of "weightlifting" refers to the sport of weight lifting, in which ballistic limits (explosive strength) with smaller weights are tested. The compound word of "powerlifting" refers to the sport of weight lifting, in which strength limits (with or without powerlifting gear) are tested.

Weight Lifting and Resistance Training

Recent controlled studies indicate that even a modest amount of resistance training has an effect on an individual's metabolic rate. This is something that I've known, as a former military serviceman, for most of my life. I have also known, as the studies reflect, that weight lifting can increase lean muscle mass while reducing fat.

What I didn't know was that adding lean muscle mass can also cause weight loss even though muscle is heavier than fat. It appears that the increase of the metabolic rate is the reason. You end up expending more energy while asleep as well as while awake.

Resistance Training without Weight Lifting

Some people, like me, can't participate in weight lifting routines. I suffered from adhesive encapsulitis (frozen shoulder) in both shoulders, about six years apart, and further exercise that could cause a recurrence isn't something I'm willing to risk.

What other forms of resistance training can achieve the same benefits as those resulting from weight lifting? Any specific kind of exercise that requires muscle resistance in order to accomplish the exercise is sufficient.

Here's an example: One of my sisters-in-law lives on a hill in which the path to her house rises at a 45 degree angle. The distance isn't that far from my house, but it takes the wind out of me to walk that path. I have to stop at the halfway point just to catch my breath. By the time I reach her house, I'm literally exhausted and have to rest for at least 15 minutes before I can do anything else. I feel the resistance in my legs and other various organs during the trip and know that I need to do it more often.

Weight Lifting and Dieting

There are other weight loss solutions that have nothing to do with weight lifting or resistance training, but the long-term effects are unknown factors. How effective are weight loss pills, for example, in an overall weight loss plan? Physical exercise benefits the human body in more ways than just weight loss.

For years, aerobic exercise and diet plans have been touted as the solution to effective weight loss and weight control. I submit that resistance training and responsible eating habits are far more effective and have a much longer-lasting effect on your overall health. Simple resistance exercises like push-ups, done the correct way, can do a world of good.

Now drop and give me twenty. Just kidding!

The best way to lose weight is proper diet. Weight training supports the loss and revs up the metabolism but if you really want to spike it up throw in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) 2 times a week.

  6. Weight lifting does aid in weight loss. More muscles in your body frame means higher metabolism which results in faster fat burning. But any resistance exercise will do either with weights or none. I've been doing resistance training focusing mostly with body weight for more than 2 years and I got a pretty good fat metabolism which in turn keeps my body lean and muscular.

Weight lifting is an effective way to achieve great results for your body. But let's not forget about our heart while doing weight lifting. I've been doing weight lifting for years and it seems like I wasn't paying enough attention to my heart during that time.In order to avoid detrimental effect on your heart and to keep your heart healthy I suggest walking. Yes, walking on a regular basis is the best way to keep your heart healthy. You can use pedometer to keep track of how much you really walk and the time it takes.

Very good post. AS one that has been weight training for most of his adult life, I have seen the benefits of weight training, using both weights and just your body. A person can most definitely lose weight just weight training. Assuming diet is in check, cardio is optional in my opinion.

  10. I run 5 days a week 10 miles each day. I've also started to add a hour of weights after my runs and sometimes a cardio kickboxing DVD. I wanted to try and do this for 6 or 7 days a week but when I try I get burnt out. Is 5 days a week enough of should I do 6? thanks!
