Weight Lifting for Weight Loss?

early barbell Let's get one thing straight before I start rambling about weight loss by weight lifting (or any form of resistance training): "Weight lifting" is the not the same thing as "weightlifting" or "powerlifting".

The compound word of "weightlifting" refers to the sport of weight lifting, in which ballistic limits (explosive strength) with smaller weights are tested. The compound word of "powerlifting" refers to the sport of weight lifting, in which strength limits (with or without powerlifting gear) are tested.

Weight Lifting and Resistance Training

Recent controlled studies indicate that even a modest amount of resistance training has an effect on an individual's metabolic rate. This is something that I've known, as a former military serviceman, for most of my life. I have also known, as the studies reflect, that weight lifting can increase lean muscle mass while reducing fat.

What I didn't know was that adding lean muscle mass can also cause weight loss even though muscle is heavier than fat. It appears that the increase of the metabolic rate is the reason. You end up expending more energy while asleep as well as while awake.

Resistance Training without Weight Lifting

Some people, like me, can't participate in weight lifting routines. I suffered from adhesive encapsulitis (frozen shoulder) in both shoulders, about six years apart, and further exercise that could cause a recurrence isn't something I'm willing to risk.

What other forms of resistance training can achieve the same benefits as those resulting from weight lifting? Any specific kind of exercise that requires muscle resistance in order to accomplish the exercise is sufficient.

Here's an example: One of my sisters-in-law lives on a hill in which the path to her house rises at a 45 degree angle. The distance isn't that far from my house, but it takes the wind out of me to walk that path. I have to stop at the halfway point just to catch my breath. By the time I reach her house, I'm literally exhausted and have to rest for at least 15 minutes before I can do anything else. I feel the resistance in my legs and other various organs during the trip and know that I need to do it more often.

Weight Lifting and Dieting

There are other weight loss solutions that have nothing to do with weight lifting or resistance training, but the long-term effects are unknown factors. How effective are weight loss pills, for example, in an overall weight loss plan? Physical exercise benefits the human body in more ways than just weight loss.

For years, aerobic exercise and diet plans have been touted as the solution to effective weight loss and weight control. I submit that resistance training and responsible eating habits are far more effective and have a much longer-lasting effect on your overall health. Simple resistance exercises like push-ups, done the correct way, can do a world of good.

Now drop and give me twenty. Just kidding!

Always remember the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, so it's ovious the more muscle mass you can build, the more you will burn of the fat, lose muscle and your body fat will increase.

  2. I did a blog just on walking to lose weight. So that part of you walking up the hill really hit a note with me. Uphill walks is the best, in my book. Unfortunately I live in a very flat area, with no scenic value whatsoever anyway.

You're absolutely right. The higher metabolism of strength training burns calories for days after the exercise and results in weight loss. Tell everyone you know LOL. Get these people off these diet pills.

Here is what I think. If you want to lose weight and not look like a skeleton you have to have both sides covered. Running alone will only help drop the pounds, but not shape anything. If you are just lifting then you can get strong and big but look like a marshmellow. I found a protein from maakoa. that actually was formulated by pro athletes to help do both at the same time.

A combination of resistance training and cardiovascular is always the best. I train ladies who work as Dubai Escorts and sometimes they feel they have gained some unwanted pounds. I recommend interval cardio training for them as this keeps them burning calories all through the day. Combined with compound weight training movements to tone the muscles – works a treat after about 4 weeks!

  7. It all depends on the kind of program or schedule that works out for you. for some it might be exercise, for some dieting and for some combination of both. but for me this worked well.

  8. Interesting article, resistance training can be a great way of losing weight, a lot of people get put off the idea though because they are scared of 'getting huge'. If only it was that simple! The truth is that your size is all dependant on calories, if you are eating a controlled diet and you are below your maintenance calorie levels then resistance training is a great way to ensure you dont loose muscle as you start to lose weight.
