Ahh, the Power of… Bacon! San Miguel Pure Foods Bacon, That Is
The American Dairy Association slogan of "Ahh, the power of cheese" has no effect on me. The television advertisements are humorous, but that's about it. No, when it comes to something having power over me, it has to be BACON. It can't be just any bacon either. It has to be extra-lean bacon. Until sometime in 2008, I had never seen extra-lean bacon. Okay, I know bacon is loaded with fat regardless of how lean it is and isn't a part of healthy eating habits, but I can't help myself. The smell overwhelms my senses.
San Miguel Pure Foods Company
The San Miguel Pure Foods Company in the Philippines makes a huge line of products including vegetable oils, feeds, flour, poultry, fresh and processed meats and dairy products. The products are sold to individual consumers as well as food service customers (like restaurants). Individual consumers are not supposed to be able to buy the products intended for the food service customers, unless they're consuming them in food service places.
The bacon I get every month is bacon intended for restaurants. I don't know what kind of pork cut is used to make the bacon, but it's extremely lean. I won't tell you how I get it because the source would probably get in trouble.
Imitation Bacon and Bacon Substitutes
When my children were still young, I swore off real bacon because it was loaded with so much fat it was ridiculous. A slice of bacon, when cooked, would shrink to a fraction of the original size. I won't mention any brand names, but my family switched to bacon substitutes such as turkey bacon in order to satisfy our bacon fixes. Still, it wasn't real bacon and it didn't taste like real bacon.
Sometime within the last 30 years or so, imitation bacon bits were invented. There wasn't any kind of meat products at all in the imitation bacon bits and that can't be healthy either. I steered clear of them.
Bacon and Weight Loss
Weight loss and bacon should be strangers to each other, right? I have discovered something over the years that may come as a shock. Fighting your urges to eat something can have the opposite effect of weight loss. Instead of eating your favorite, satisfying foods in small quantities, you end up scarfing down much more of the foods that are less satisfying. You can actually gain weight by cutting out your favorite foods.
I honestly don't eat enough bacon for it to have any effect on me. I haven't gained a pound in over a year after a sudden, rapid weight loss occurred. I don't eat bacon every day. Instead, my breakfasts are varied. I have bacon and eggs one day, pancakes or waffles on another, oatmeal on another and cold cereal on yet another day. Sometimes my breakfasts include toasted white bread and sometimes not. I eat two full meals per day and I rarely snack between them.
Health Cautions
The last time I had my cholesterol levels checked, I was well within the norms. Although there isn't a proven direct correlation between cholesterol consumed and blood serum cholesterol, why take any chances? Just because I can eat bacon and get away with it doesn't mean you can. Be cautious about what you eat — always.
As for me, it's time for breakfast and I can smell BACON!

Does anyone know where that phrase 'bringing home the bacon' comes from?
Scott
While most people know what it means (making money), a popular urban legend describes it like this, as part of an email message:
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."
