The KeywordLuv Format is Now Required on ALL Comments Containing Keywords

Comment spammers are getting very good at writing content that passes the filters. It's getting harder and harder to tell the comment spam from the legitimate comments.

Therefore, the time has come to draw the line.

Comment spammers (the automated type) haven't figured out KeywordLuv yet and they probably won't mess with it until it becomes really widespread. I am now requiring the "YourName@YourKeywords" format in the name field on two of my blogs. Two of my other blogs will be operating the exact same way when I get done with them.

If you're only using your name, you can continue to do so. Only people using keywords are affected. I've placed an "Important Note" above the comment form to make my new policy as obvious as possible. Similar words are also contained within my "Comments Policy" in the "Policies and Statements" sidebar widget.

Unlike the author of the plugin, who simply removes the link if the rules aren't followed, I will delete the comments without hesitation. If you can read this, you can read the policy before you get to the comment form.

I hate to create and enforce strict rules, but it's either do it this way, or turn comment moderation on. I'd much rather make it as easy as possible for both you and I to keep the comments section free of spam.

(Update 2009-04-12: It doesn't matter now. I reverted the comment author links back to "nofollow".)

This is not a bad rule. I hate keyword spammers as well. What makes it hard is that these spammers are making life tough for legitimate commenters as well.

You can only arrive at a compromise – spammers are like cockroaches – they seem to adapt to every type of anti-spam spray :P

  3. Tom from neolight hair says:

This is completely fair RT— automated spammers are giving legitimate commenters a bad name, basically polluting blogs.

My view on any measures on a blog or forum is this: it's your house and I am merely a guest. I don't moan when people have locks on their doors and I won't moan when I see anti-spam measures. Sites with good anti-spam measures are easy to use and are coherent. When I hit a blog filled with awful spam comments I tend to click away very quickly.

Anyway, I use KeywordLuv too – I think on your recommendation – so I use it automatically anyway :)

You still have the right idea. A lot of "do follow" bloggers delete your message if it has a keyword on it. They don't understand that that is the bonus for bloggers: adding a keyword link. idiots.

  11. James Andrew says:

It's hard to deal with people who are leaving spammy comments. I don't know the reason of they are leaving non sense comments. Instead of leaving non sense comments, why can't they leave valuable and informative comments.

  12. RT, I'm glad to see you are implementing these rules. I've given serious thought to writing a post similar to this saying NO Keyword Title Names allowed, but "YourName@keyword" is fine. I'm just not sure it will help or that people will even comply. It's noted on my Comment Policy page, but not everyone looks at that before attempting to comment. Michael Martine and I discussed this recently and he has text near the comment section as you do but he says most people ignore it anyway.

Just this morning I've sent two emails (something I don't normally do) to ask for their real name to include with their comment, otherwise I delete them/mark as spam without hesitation. If they don't reply promptly to my email, the comment disappears forever. Comment spammers are out of control, and I'm not inclined to continue taking the time emailing them either for their real names.

I think your policy is a great idea. Just this afternoon I saw a dofollow blog that had the (almost) same post posted five or six times with different links and anchor text on each post. Clearly the poster was using some type of automated software to blast his comments out to lots of dofollow blogs. The date stamp was a few days between each post, and the posts had slight variations in the text to prevent any automated detection of identical posts.

I think that if each different blog owner sets different rules then that type of automated spam will be much less likely.

I think I will have to take this policy soon as well. The whole reason I installed keyword luv is because I don't like people with names like "luxury florida real estate"…I do like rewarding other bloggers though with keyword links…but sometimes I'm ready to put back the no follow on too because of so many people who abuse it and me not having time to sift through thousands of comments!

I don't mind deleting even the useful comments when they don't obey the rules.
