Biofuel to Replace Petroleum?

gas nozzle As the price of gasoline and diesel in the US remains above $3 US dollars per gallon and shows signs that it will only continue to increase, more alternative fuel sources must be put into use. Can you afford to pump $40 to $100 per week into your gas tank? For many people, that's one fourth of their weekly income.

A viable alternative available now is biofuel, and I believe it's the only way to move away from petroleum-based fuel in a reasonable amount of time. Other alternative energy sources are either unavailable in most parts of the world, or are very cost prohibitive. Sure, it feels good to be green, but what good does it do if it takes nearly your entire lifetime for an energy source to pay for itself?

Biodiesel is just one area of discussion at BioFuel Debate, and it's in their biodiesel forum, where the topics include biodiesel safety, fueling locations and commercial availability. A lot of people don't understand what biodiesel is and that most modern cars made to be driven in the US can use it instead of diesel. Other forms of biofuel can be used in gasoline-powered engines, such as ethanol.

What impact will biofuel have on our economy and our environment? Biofuel impact is another area of discussion that deals with these topics and more. I'm interested in the what kind of effect it will have on the economy as we push away imported oil from the OPEC cartel.

I rarely write about things that affect every developed country in the world and I think I should do it more often. Biofuel will have a huge effect on future generations, so it's very important to get involved with it as much as possible right now.

  1. Thanks for sharing about this issue. I think, a thorough study should be done accordingly. They should see the pros and cons of using biofuel instead of petroleum.

We've been running our cars on chip fat for a few years here in the UK. Well, the diesel cars, anyway.

Biofuel sounds like such a good idea. The problem comes in when you realize how most of the world is going to start producing it.As with most good ideas, humans can go about it wrong and make everything even worse. In my part of the world, we are going to have to start eating a lot more fries if we want to power cars to drive 40 kilometers or more per trip! Or, grow fuel using farmland we now have at full capacity to grow food.
Firstly, we all still need food. Since bio fuels will put more money (in some cases) in the farmer's pocket, they will stop growing corn for food and start growing corn for fuel. The food has to come from somewhere, so in another part of the world they simply clear and burn a bunch of rainforest and start growing food. Scientists are already worrying that someday the rainforests will be a desert due to deforestation, which has increased dramatically last year to get more room to grow soybeans which used to be grown in the states in the same places that they now grow fuel. This directly correlates to the US government's bio fuel plans and farmer subsidies. There is an excellent article in Times magazine about this last month.
Biofuel is definitely cleaner and has potential. We just have to start getting a little smarter as a race.

The price of flour has gone way up since biofuel has been discussed in North America, affecting the cost of what we eat. The price of a loaf of bread has jumped over 50% in some stores as a result. :???:

I like the idea of cars running on water better myself. Water is easier to get than biofuel.

The price of energy, in particular fossil fuel, is historically high and seems set to increase. Fuel bills – whether for the home or for the car – take up an ever-increasing proportion of people's budgets.

I've been to the forum you mentioned, BioFuel Debate and I'm now an active member there. It helps me with the content for my biofuel blog. Good stuff.

  10. Fuel Nut says:

It's important to note that many "biofuels" turn out to be no more efficient than gasoline or diesel. Sadly it seems that special interest groups (i.e. corn farmers) are trying to make a buck rather than choose the fuel that is best for us (something like algae).

Biofuel certainly sounds a good idea and also environmental friendly

  12. In coming future. We need to depend upon alternative resources for energy. Bio fuel is cheaper compared to petroleum. This reduces cost and also reduce environment pollution.

Still waiting for this cheap form of fuel. Don't see it happening anytime soon. Using ethanol seams to be a bust as far as pollution and corn prices go.

Biofuel is really a good alternative to regular petroleum. It's cleaner and more friendly to the environment.
