Backlink Building with DoFollow Blogs and the CommentLuv WordPress Plugin

Chain Links Stephen Cronin of More Than Scratch the Surface asked me to elaborate on my comment about people wasting their time building links with "DoFollow" blogs when I wrote my thoughts on themes, RSS and splogs. There are many ways to build backlinks to your website, but I'm only going to touch on two of them.

DoFollow Blogs

Blogs that have disabled the rel="nofollow" (in other words, blogs which use plugins to change to "DoFollow") attribute in comment header links can be good sources of backlinks if used correctly. There is one caveat: The comments may appear to be comment spam to the blog owners or other casual observers.

Most people aware of having their comments followed still only enter their name and main website address in the comment header. I'm one of those people. Anyway, what we end up with is a bunch of backlinks that use our names as the anchor text. These particular backlinks are practically worthless for link-building and keyword/phrase authority. What we should be doing is using keywords or key phrases instead of our names and using specific page URLs. There's one drawback: If the content of the page being commented on isn't related to our keywords/phrases, the backlinks won't do much to improve our authority for them. They'll be better than the first kind of backlinks, but not as good as backlinks related to the content of that page. I've tested these techniques since January of 2008, but I could still be wrong. Google changes their algorithms all the time and what's true today may not be true tomorrow.

In my opinion, it isn't worth the effort to try to manipulate the DoFollow blog comments unless, of course, you have a lot of time on your hands. If you want to do it (and I'll do it on occasion just to see what happens), you may want to include a signature near the bottom of the comments so the blog owner can see that you're not a link spammer.

The CommentLuv WordPress Plugin

The CommentLuv Wordpress Plugin removes the rel="nofollow" filter that WordPress adds by default to comments, regardless if the attribute is removed by a DoFollow plugin. It attempts to parse the feed URL for the website in the comment header URL. It doesn't always work. When it does, the full post title and URL for the latest post from the commenter's feed will appear at the bottom of the comments. If you're in the habit of stuffing slugs, titles and content with keywords, you'll get excellent backlinks on blogs that use this plugin.

Again, however, there's the same drawback with the backlinks. If your post title isn't related to the page you're commenting on, it'll lack authority. At least this method doesn't require any extra work on your part.

The Combination

The best blogs to build your backlinks are those that are DoFollow blogs and use the CommentLuv WordPress Plugin. You can get two excellent backlinks at the same time. This is one such blog. Feel free to use the backlink building techniques here, but be advised: I click through these kinds of links when I see them and I delete spammy looking comments at will, as per my comments policy.

I'm like you … I just can't bring myself to put anything other than my name when I leave a comment. That being said, there's nothing necessarily wrong with ranking well for my own name.

I've been using the comment luv plugin on my blog for a while now. But, I still use it in combination with the LinkLove plugin, so that the links are not followed until a person has left more than just one or two comments.

I would actually add a third plugin that people can look for if they're trying to build backlinks through comments … the top commentators widget. Even on "no follow" blogs, if you're on someone's top commentators the link is usually followed … sitewide if they have the widget in their sidebar.

  12. I know it really shouldn't bother me, but sometimes all the keywords really take away from appreciating a comment's message. I suggest a halfway point. Like "Sam the Eliptical Trainer King" or something like that. It's more personal, slips under the radar of some of the comment nazis , and still has your keywords in there so should still work for SEO.
Of course, if everyone else already left a comment from "Septic Sewer Suckers" or "Sub Prime Loans" I guess feel free to leave one from "Tangle Free Hair Solutions". The signature underneath is a good idea, since comments rely on personal contact on some level.

  13. I think each blog owner has their right to allow posts with backlinks or not. If they are too liberal, then they will be dealing with a lot of spam issues. If they are too conservative, they won't have many comments. Finding the right balance, will allow you to reward readers with a link back to their site, while at the same time, making it so that not everyone can just spam your site for a free link.

  27. Commenting with your name is very ineffective. You get the anchor text of your name going to whatever link you use. You'll get well ranked for your name, but that's about it.

The KeywordLuv plugin makes it easier to use keywords without it looking spammy.

  28. Enjoyed your post RT. I'm considering using CommentLuv on my blog, still on the fence at this point however.

  29. Ian Richardson from Internet Business says:

I've noticed a huge difference in the number and quality of comments after I installed CommentLuv. Especially when people see I approve comments that are of value in information and aren't simply one liners that want to get links back to their site.

I would encourage anyone who has a blog to seriously consider installing the CommentLuv plugin and at least consider removing the nofollow tag. Sure you might get a few spam comments, but you can always delete these instead of approving.

Remember, comments are content for your site, fresh content, and if the person leaving the comment has written something of value then it can help when the search spiders crawl your site for fresh content.

    Hi RT,

Got here from your latest post on DoFollow (6/20). What I'm experimenting on at the moment is putting on a unique name as anchor to my link giving my site an authority on that unique keyword. I'm trying to see if a unique keyword authority translates to a high pagerank. :???: Once I got authority and (possibly good PR), I would then work on other keywords. What's your thought on that?

Xeldec's last blog post… Campbell River and the Mystery of the Foot

    • I'll save you the trouble. Keyword authority and PageRank are 2 different animals. You can be number one for a keyword in the SERPS and have a PageRank of 0. You can have a PageRank of 5 for a particular page with certain keywords and not be anywhere near the first page in the SERPS. Basically, what I'm saying is that one doesn't have any effect on the other.

Your best bet is to concentrate on the keywords and not worry about the PR. Your goal is to rank as high in the SERPS as possible for every keyword you target.

I would argue that seeking out dofollow blogs *is* important when you are first launching a site. Once it has significant presence with Google, the importance of dofollow links diminishes.

I do agree that blog platforms should be changed so that you can enter both your Website URL *and* title (keywords). This would make the whole problem of links from comments much tidier. There's no downside, really.

  91. Honestly I am interested to the blogs that practice a do follow plug in. I mean those people who use it are the ones who knows how to give and not just to take. There are millions of people that could visit ones blog everyday and that drives traffic to their site. Isn't fair to reward their visitor simply just having a DO follow site. Thanks for explaining the no follow and do follow plug in here. I hope a lot would understand better the pros and cons of it.

  92. I think dofollow should be allowed, provided people make constructive comments.

Its a small incentive for people to blog, they get something back out of it. I do agree spammers ruin it all. When I comment I try my best to get my views across and help keep the conversation following

I think that commentLuv works really great, and it's a good idea to implement it on our blogs. It's not only building the links, but also inform the readers of what's happening on the blogs…

    Great post

I use both dofollow as well commentluv and keywordluv. It has brought in a little traffic and a few comments, but I have not really seen the benefit yet.

  96. Altesino from backlinks says:

Keyword luv is a great plug to keep the posts looking the same. That was you have a really name and the anchor text that commenters want.

A great way to find more sites using the Keywordluv plugin is to google "This site uses KeywordLuv. Enter YourName@YourKeywords"

Connect Content is way better IMO.

  105. Hi,

I thought I knew all about do-follow and no follow blogs, until I read this article. Thanks for the post

  106. Thanks for this plugin. I just recently added commentluv to my site, and it’s a nice way for people to not only leave comments but also direct back to what they’ve recently commented on.

    Great post

  108. I am new to Comment Luv. I just found out about it recently. I have submitted a couple of comments on various sites, but please explain this… I still have to approve the pings for it to work, right? Also, I had a problem with spam comments early on and I may have deleted some legit pings because I did not realize what they were. How do I tell if a ping is spam or legit? Maybe it will be more clear after I post this comment and see the ping? Thanks for this great post!

Comment Luv works well as most of us will know. But I guess over commenting will stop the love.

Anyone else that has seen this happen?

    • Chris from Free PS3 says:

I think the key is to make sure the comments you receive are relevant. I guess this is best achieved through moderation and maybe warnings throughout the site that only valid and useful comments will be accepted.

  110. I suggest a halfway point. Like "Sam the Eliptical Trainer King" or something like that.

  111. Kai Lo from Number One On Google says:

There are a lot of "dofollow" blogs out there that lie. They post giant banners that say they are, and in the page sources show that they are not.

  112. great post…. you have done great job….it very cool blog. linking is very useful thing you have really helped lots of people who visit this blog and provided them this usefull information. thanks a lot for this..gud luck..regards,

  113. This post is a testament to the value of commentluv.
You've got a great page with more than 100 comments and real visitors. Look no furthur to this page for proof that it works.

  114. Thanks for sharing – having tried and implemented them,I think both commentluv and keywordluv are great for bloggers and commenters – Its also a great way to improve your brand too. The nofollow attribute still serves as an anchor to your site with no Search benefits.

  115. Thomas from FastSize Extender Scam says:

I don't think that do-following a blog will harm it in any manner. Rather it will invite new readers who like to comment and participate in discussions and increases the blog credibility.

Keywordluv is a great plugin so that others can catch headlines of other blogs they may be interested in.

  117. Excellent post! I have been using the techniques you mentioned for a while now. However, unlike most I try my best to add to the content of the bloggers page. I am a blogger and realize how annoying spam comments can be. By providing a quality comment I hope to add to the site I am commenting on as well as building my backlinks.

I seriously hope that this works. I've been trying, but we'll see if I see any results soon! Thanks for the tips.

  121. Elina Kidman says:

I think do follow comments are pretty much worthless. In my opinion, any free and easy made link building techniques are bound to be valued poorly by Google.
