The Critical Critics is a multi-author blog. The authors criticize classic and current films, either foreign or domestic (United States). The movie reviews are "Direct and impartial – the way movie reviews are meant to be." That's a fantastic goal, but I'm afraid no one is impartial. We're all tainted by experience and emotion. Watching a movie with a completely open mind is rarely possible. Nevertheless, these authors do a better job, in my opinion, than the critics we normally see reviews being done by.
I like the theme, a combination of two themes and some additional markup. The sidebars are clean and uncluttered. I love the header images. That's the kind of header I want to be able to use on a blog or two. There's no contact page, however, so the theme isn't completely perfect. The only thing I really don't like, and maybe it's just me, has nothing to do with the theme. It's the Kontera inline ads. Unlike plugins that let you hide almost any kind of ads from the regular visitors, Kontera doesn't work that way. You either have to show the ad links to all of your visitors or to none of them; there is no middle ground. Well, at least Mike (also known as General Disdain on the blog) looks like he has them limited to the front page.
I visit another blog on a regular basis for general media news, but this is probably the first movie-specific blog I've actually taken the time to read anything at. The most recent review, "Fool’s Gold (2008)", compares the movie with "Into the Blue (2005)", a movie I've already seen. Based on the review, I'm better off not looking for this one. Anyway, this is just one of many, many movie reviews already present on the blog. If movies are your primary entertainment source, save yourself some rental store headaches by checking these reviews out before you go.
