What I Hate Day for 2008

Swede It's time for the 2nd annual celebration of my "What I Hate Day", in honor of Valentine's Day in the US and other countries. My list from last year hasn't changed.

I'm going to reemphasize some things and add a couple of things to the list:

  • I hate being called Ricky. I've hated it since I was a child. I don't mind Rich, Richard or RT. I prefer RT, but I can't do anything about my US family. With them, I'll always be "Ricky".
  • I hate "Happy Days" (the television series) and anything associated with it, Ron Howard, and being called Richie. Call me that and prepare to die.
  • I hate people who pretend to know what they're talking or writing about when they don't, like newbie bloggers that publish tutorials they ripped off from someone else.
  • I hate traveling, regardless of the mode of transportation.
  • I hate Valentine's Day, especially this year.

Okay, you got off easy this year. I'll probably have another list ready by this time next year.

Yes, nothing annoys me more than newbies who pose as experts and then make the same mistakes that they ask others to avoid.

I hate being called Ricky too. Mainly because it's not my name

I do hate Valentine's Day too – or Hallmark Day as I like to call it. No one should wait until the 14th Feb to say "I love you", do what I do and say it every day.

    Hi
Came via your link on Scratchback on Blog about Blogging.

Im so passionate about this idea, been talking about it left right and center. And now I have come across your blog. The benefits of this little idea are enormous.

So have subscribed to your email updates. Haven't had chance to have a good look round yet but seems chock full of goodies.

My middle name is Richard. Would preferred being called Ricky because frankly anyone calling me at all by any name would be a welcome change. :)

I also hate 14th Feb. Hate hate hate it mucho gusto.

Anwho, Hello and 'nice site'.

You don't get called by your name either? I get called "honey", "darling", "dad", "kuya" (don't ask), but rarely anything else. Visiting relatives this month will evoke "Ricky" but that's about it. Let the wincing begin.

I haven't written about scratchback yet. I want to wait until I've had time to see how well it works (over a couple of months).

My sons name is Richard and he refuses to be called Ricky either. Thank goodness it never caught on. I called you RT right off the bat because that's the way you had your name on your posts. You certainly have a lot of "hate" going on today. I hope you have a good day RT. :)

    Watcha!

People have started to catch onto 'gee' as a way of beckoning me.

That came about after I circumnavigated egypt for 3 months, and trying to vocalise the word Graham to the locals became a frustrating and frankly time wasting excerise. So I ended up just saying 'Gee' which they could pronounce. I have since used this to any non english speaking person, we have many in England, and for some reason, Graham is a hard name to pronounce. Even for the French!

    So GEE it is.

RE ScratchBack. For me, it's more a way of getting my links out there rather than waiting for money to fall on my lap. I didn't get it initially to make money, just a fun thing that would actually encourage people to want to have their link front page and to thus drive more traffic both ways.

For me, Im getting around listing where i can. And the increase in traffic since this has been astonishing. So i think the mindset it use it to spread yourself about, which in turn will help generate traffic and then hopefully more money for you from your regular ad income stream. Don't look at it as a means for people to come running at your door begging to get on the list. Although I think in time, when it hots up, this could be what happens.

Been chatting to Jim Kukral, the chap who came up with this idea, and many more. Doing a interview with him soon, so will let you know when that happens. Should be fun…

Thanks for the TIP, good on you!!!

    • I'm doing the spread the wealth routine myself, I just don't have much of the wealth to spread around yet. I didn't see it as a money maker. I think I've only hit 3 places so far. Some of those in the directory don't have the widget up for some reason.

I hate to say it, but this is something I probably spend the majority of my time doing. Of course, I'll never have 2 blog articles open in separate tabs and just paraphrase from them, but there are only so many tips you can give for SEO or good content, for example. I find that I'm not the only one, though, if you read Problogger most of what's there has been said somewhere else also. It's the curse of blogging about being a webmaster: the originality is all about how you've aggregated information from other sources.

    • As I mentioned on Graham's blog (above), you can imitate and use ideas and such, but plagiarism is what I'm referring to and you're not doing that.

Whenever there's a good topic of any kind, it's only natural to see it repeated in various ways. I've seen cut and paste jobs (I even reviewed one).

What? You didn't think all my ideas are original, did you?

    Amen, RT!

I despise Valentine's Day as well.

  8. Your list was indeed longer last year. Hehehe. It was Valentine's Day in my country yesterday and you would probably hate it there, too. Almost every person in the mall had flowers. You wouldn't be able to go a minute without seeing one. It's strange and sort of removes all romance from the day. I didn't receive flowers and got into a fight instead. Maybe I should hate Feb. 14 as well. Hehehe
