I Got Them Varmint Ants But Good
My wife sent me 2 bottles of the Hot Shot MaxAttrax Roach Killing Powder back in November so that I could kill me some pesky ants. It isn't a natural ant killer, but it isn't like harmful pesticides either.
Although the front of a bottle says "roach killing powder", the fine print says "Kills Cockroaches, Ants, Silverfish, Palmetto Bugs & Waterbugs". I already knew this, or I wouldn't have asked for boric acid in the first place, the primary ingredient of this product. I already had experience, back in 1985, with using another brand of boric acid in order to wipe out a roach infestation.
The kind of ants that infested my house, and I don't know what variety they actually were (I know they weren't Red Imported Fire Ants), were the kind that build nests on the wall just below the ceiling. These buggers were also incredibly fast-moving. I can't tell you how many times they made suicide runs into my freshly-made hot coffee. I got tired of fishing them out. Yes, I drank the coffee after removing the ants. Don't tell me you're thinking "ewww" because their little carcasses really can't hurt you.
Anyway, I sprinkled the powder above the kitchen cabinets and in other locations where I spotted the trails (lots and lots of trails) and over the course of time, I no longer saw trails at all. This war against the ants was personal as well as the only way to protect the food items in my cabinets. The little buggers were burrowing into cereal boxes and packages of ramen noodles and I simply can't have that happening.
My house is finally free of them varmint ants and I'm a happy person.

Be careful what you wish for! Of course ants and other pests are a nuisance in the home but our attempts to wipe them out with chemical warfare has lead to a frightening drop in bee populations around the world. Not worried? You should be… human life will be severely threatened without the bees because crops will not be pollinated.
