I wrote "Coffee or Postum? You Decide" back in February of last year. It was one of many of the articles I wrote simply because I felt like writing it. It wasn't optimized for keywords, or so I thought. I didn't even know how to do that back then. Heck, it didn't draw a lot of traffic at all until one day…
If you Google for "Postum", that post is at #1 (right now). What propelled it to the top? Heck, I don't know, but a lot of searches were bringing people to my article on it. I think the trigger was pulled when Kraft decided to pull the plug on making Postum (a coffee substitute), and Postum fans were looking for more information. I think it made it to the top because it was well written.
It just goes to show you; you can't always predict how well an article will do. Other, unforeseen, factors can make an impact.
Update: A day later, my link is bouncing up and down in the top 10. Whatever forces drive this kind of behavior, I'll never know.
