You can call it a "duh" moment. I started searching around Wendy’s OBA, Blog Tips & Tricks to find out what OBA stood for only to find it clearly showing in the left sidebar. It stands for "Online Business Alliance" — I never would have guessed that. Perhaps it's all the friggin' US TV commercials or my own experiences, but anything with two or three letters that starts with "OB" makes me thing of "OB" or "OBE". OB is an abbreviation for obstetrics whereas OBE can stand for "overcome by events".
A quick scan of the theme reminded me of Digg, so I checked the footer and found out that it was a Digg-like theme and where it originated. I then got sidetracked looking at a bunch of themes. When my brain refocused on the task at hand, I pulled Digg up in another tab and compared. Well, they're not exactly alike and thank goodness for that. The theme looks better than Digg.
I recently read an article that visitors scan a blog in the shape of an "F". Follow those strokes when writing the letter and you'll discover it's left top to bottom, then across the top and then across the middle. This means the most important sidebar content should be "above the fold" in the left sidebar (for a three-column theme, that is). I don't think RSS and other subscriptions are important enough to take up that space in Wendy's sidebar. I'm also guilty, so it's kind of like the pot calling the kettle black. I plan to change my sidebars real soon.
I like the original content and mostly enjoyed reading both "Internet Gurus BAH!!!!" and "Raising a Baby is Like Running A Business" and I hate to say it, but the lack of punctuation (mostly commas) made them difficult to read in some parts. Commas are like pauses and if there isn't a pause in a place that needs it, it can read like rambling. I didn't see anything else to detract from reading, like bad spelling or anything like that.
I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but where is the recent posts list? I scanned both sidebars and couldn't find one. I then checked the monthly archives and saw there were few entries per month. I think a recent posts list would be more attractive to visitors than the archives. That's a personal choice, to be sure, but you have to consider how long casual visitors stick around.
At this point, I can't honestly say whether I like this blog or not. Perhaps more frequent articles would make it more appealing to me. You'll just have to take a look and make up your own mind out about it.
