Blog Review: SlipperyBrick

SlipperyBrick

What an awesome blog! SlipperyBrick has a blog design that stands out from most of the blogs that I've looked at in recent weeks. I wish I had that kind of design talent. I sincerely believe the way a blog looks when you first arrive is like the first impression on a blind date. If it looks really good, you'll probably be back for more, regardless of the content.

Content, however, isn't a problem for this blog. There are pictures (or images of some kind) on every article I looked at. If the headlines don't draw you in, the images will. How does "NoPoPo: Urine Powered Batteries" grab you? Or how about "Star Trek photon torpedo coffin to die for"? This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about!

People who are just starting to blog and looking for a way to display advertising without being overly obtrusive could take some pointers from this blog. Even people who are looking to redesign can get a hint or two. Just my casual, unprofessional eye can spot some things that I should have thought about a long time ago.

[Note: As of December 2008 (more than a year later), I still read this blog by email and occasionally visit in person. I like how the author(s) embed humorous tech tips from time to time.]

Along with the great looking site design, the name also grabs your attention. I don't know the significance of slippery brick but the name makes me want to check out the content also.

  3. I agree the design of Slippery Brick is indeed very nice and, like you, I don't have what it takes to make any of my sites look even close to that. Your site looks good though…

I also agree with first impressions being very important especially for a new blog. I think people are more likely to comment on a new blog when it looks professional.

Unfortunately I've never taken the time to develop any design skills and have always taken the easy way out with wordpress or blogger.

I am currently searching for a good design for my site which is also based on wordpress.
Can anyone recommend a wordpress template that has only 1 column and the menu is only in the top?

  5. dave from unique irish gifts says:

I have to admit I had a wee look at it only intending to spend a short time there. 30mins later and I can confirm that it does indeed grab the attention.

  6. Andrew from Calling Cards says:

I mostly like the way material is presented: first comes the picture, than only one or two paragraphs, and the rest of the text is hidden. Thus, when you don't like the content, you shouldn't scroll the entire page for passing by, and it makes the blog informative. By the way, the content is worth reading even for housewives.

  7. Andy from Consolidate Student Loans says:

Wow that is a nice layout. I'd prefer 2 columns rather than 3, but other than that, great layout.

  8. Karlonia from Xbox 360 Repair says:

This looks like an interesting site; I especially like the rather unusual, attention-grabbing headlines. This reminds me that I need to more of these with my own articles in order to gain more readers.

  10. Eric from Custom Saltwater Aquarium says:

Great post. I do think that headlines and the first impression of a site will determine the success of a blog. Slippery Brick Does have a nice design and catchy headers so I might look over there site a little more like you stated for some ideas :) .

    Thanks!

  13. Wawanesa says:

Nice and soft design. And the content is much worth of spending 30 minutes a day. I would say the content attracts me more then the design.

It definitely has a style to strive for. Sadly, the google adsense ad's are not relevant AT ALL. Wrinkle creams and what not showing up in it.

Good find, that is indeed a well designed site. And the products are crazy… urine powered batteries? I'd be very impressed if that actually worked!

Interest blog and cool funny devices!

  22. andy from Free Credit Report says:

Upon a second look SlipperyBrick definitely has an effective layout even with just the right amount of adsense ads and amazon banner on the sides. I try to have something like that using wordpress but my adsense is on the right sidebar instead of the left. I also like how the plethora of categories are clearly laid out on the right.

  23. Mark from Moving Company says:

That's a pretty interesting blog and quite an effective layout. This is the kind of creative thinking all webmasters should strive to achieve.

  24. Jenny from Window Blinds says:

I think many new designs and themes have somehow taken after this general design…including my own new site on window blinds information. Something cool about the sidebar that has one column for the most part but breaks into two columns as well. It's fresh. I like it.

That is a pretty good design. Easily navigable and not too packed with lots of distractions. I've seen better layouts than this too though.

Thats one thing that I need to change about my blog is its design, as of now it just has a standard template. But I agree with your post that its design will really make it stand out compared to the rest!
