Blog Review: So You Want To Teach?

So You Want To Teach?

I can't believe I let my blog reviews slip away from me. Joel requested this review back on the 13th and I'm just now getting to it. Of course, my reasons for the delay have nothing to do with his review — other things (in the real world) got in the way.

I'm incorporating snapshots of blog front pages, starting with this review. Anyway, without further ado…

When I first arrived at So You Want To Teach?, I noticed one thing. What a nice layout! I could tell Joel, a band director in Texas, put a lot of effort into his blog. According to his State of the Blog article, he did quite a few things to get it to look as good as it does, including the removal of clutter in the sidebar.

I have to admit the only teaching I ever did was to full-grown men in the military. As hard as that was, teaching anyone below adulthood would be a challenge I probably couldn't face. I can only empathize with those who do it for a living. As Joel pointed out in his New Teacher Survival Kit, the number of teachers who quit after the first year or two of teaching matches or exceeds the number of teachers who stick with the profession.

Joel's blog is a valuable resource for teachers of all kinds, elementary through high school, possibly even college. If you're already a teacher, or thinking of becoming one, I recommend you spend some time reading the articles on this blog. It can only help you to understand the challenges you face.

Thanks for the great review. I have definitely worked hard on the layout and presentation of the site!

I have to agree with the layout and design. Its eye-catching and, somehow, appropriate for the subject matter (does that make sense?). I'm torn on those links in the footer, though. I wonder if they'd be better closer to the top of the page, perhaps in the sidebar. I did go all the way to the bottom, though, so perhaps others also do. I like the cross linking to other articles that you've written.

Aside, RT, its ironic how SSF has caught a word that is part of the smiley collection (cool).

This somehow just pinged my blog today. I thought I'd let you know that I redesigned the layout back in January. I'd be interested in any other suggestions you might have!

  4. Hi, I am an ESL teacher in southern Italy and, even though I have experience, it's always good to get advice and perspectives from other teachers dealing with the same issues. I'll be back often, and when I have LOTS of time to read through! Thx!
