Are Bloggers Whiners? Reason #99 Digg Is Anti-Blog Oriented

My dastardly son submitted my article, Is Google Evil Now?, to Digg about an hour ago. I don't think you can delete a Digg submission, so I did the next best thing. I dugg it.

The first (and only, so far) commenter left this comment:

Sounds to me it's more like a bunch of bloggers whining about their pageranks being dropped than google actually being evil. One day when google decides to start a program known as "skynet" then I will be a little concerned. Until then I don't see much wrong, they are thriving in a capitalist market and making the internet better. Just because they are successful and wealthy doesn't make them evil.

Excuse me? There are millions of bloggers and more than just a "bunch" of bloggers discussing this issue. Google doesn't give out PageRank easily to begin with. With a maximum of 10 possible, both Technorati's most linked to blog (Engadget) and Technorati's most favorited blog (Boing Boing) only have PageRanks of 7. Can somebody point me to a blog that has a higher PageRank than 7? I'd like to see that.

The commenter is obviously not a blogger and doesn't care about bloggers, hence the "whining" comment. I won't be surprised if I see more "anti-blog" comments.

We aren't whiners, we are just not liking how some of this stuff works. My Technorati authority was 422 last week. It's now 371. I'll never have a page rank above 3. We just want to understand the process. That's all. Great post RT.

If you compare the internet to a city, and with only 10 rankings available, city hall and the fire hall(s) should be ranked at 10. A blog is most comparable to an individual home, or in some cases a small mall of businesses. While the mall might be more popular and no one wants to hang out at the fire hall, importance isn't based on entertainment or popularity, necessarily.A blog usually has one, or two people involved. How can that be as important overall as a business employing hundreds, and owning many servers on which all of our blogs might reside?
And yes, I can see how a drop in pagerank could be upsetting when it seems unrelated to your own activity. But they own the pagerank, and they make the rules. My own rank of three has been there for months, but I never aspired to seven. We have a blog about beer and jokes, for !@#$ sakes, how important to the entire world do I think I am?

Very important. Humor is the polar opposite of seriousness and necessary to maintain the balance of nature.

I think it's also that the commenter seems to have entirely accepted the "do no evil" tag from Google. It's a great shield because we all take it in and swallow it and say "well, Microsoft is much worse". All it means is that MS is more open about their nefariousness

If Google are taking steps to change rankings, fair or not, they should publicise this. Many bloggers blog for a living and their ranking could affect their income.
