Having spent about six years in Hawaii, living on Kauai for almost four years and being stationed on Oahu for two years while in the military, I can tell you from first-hand experience that Hawaii has some of the most beautiful landscapes, beaches and sunsets. Some things that aren't native to the islands, but are usually made by the natives, are the hawaiian shirts. I wore out many a shirt while going through high school on Kauai.
Living in Hawaii is all about taking it slow. Drop the dress shoes and grab a pair of flip flops. Slip on a Hawaiian shirt, or a T-Shirt, a pair of shorts and spend some time at the beach or at one of the many waterfalls. Anything is better than fast-paced work. Don't forget to leave the cell phone and PDA behind when you leave the job behind. Some people dress like that when they're at work too!
Mad Gringo supports the "go slow" mentality with an array of products including men's Hawaiian shirts, sarongs, pareos and mini-sarongs for the ladies, "Da kine" (which means just about anything) T-Shirts, and other accessories. I'm partial to the T-Shirts myself.
When you get a chance, check out Mad Gringo's men's Hawaiian shirts. The prices they display are the same or less than what I paid for similar shirts more than 20 years ago. If I'm not mistaken, plain business shirts are more expensive these days. You know, you don't have to live in Hawaii to "go slow". All Americans need to adopt that mentality, not just natives of Hawaii.
