My Global Translator Plugin Is Out Of Here!

I've written about problems with the Global Translator plugin before. I managed to get it to work with the last version of WordPress. I didn't realize until a few minutes ago that it doesn't work with my upgrade to version 2.3.

As of right now, it's off my blog for good and it won't be making a reappearance later on down the road. I didn't link to it this time for a reason. I don't want anyone else pulling their hair out over a plugin that isn't worth the trouble for all the trouble it causes.

In fact, I'm never going to put a translation option on this blog again. What a waste of time!

You should try Trevor's Translate widget — it has little dependency on WP and has as much language options as Google Translate, which it uses. Trevor's done a great job on it so far.

I find that the Translate widget comes in very handy in my site, as my site stats shows at least 15% of my visitors using it.

  2. Nope, not gonna do it. Thanks anyway, Lorna. I just went over some statistics and compared. Most of the translations that were being done were coming from the same sources, spam sources. It's not worth the headache to keep messing with any translation services for the very small, legitimate, amount of people using them for what they're intended to be used for.

Someone beat me to it. Trevor's Translate widget hasn't given me any trouble at all, I tried about 2-3 others before that one. But if it's not useful to you, you're better off using your precious blog real estate for something more productive.

  4. I tried to install Trevor's widget, but my theme isn't widgetized. He sent me an email with the right function call, but nothing appears.

  5. Sorry to hear the Global Translator isn't working for you. I've got it working right now on my (rather amateurish lol) installation of WP 2.5.1

Not encouraging you to install it but I know I've gotten a good deal of foreign traffic over at another blog I run (Happy Horror).

I see what you mean though because if something gets too frustrating it's not worth it. :)

  6. Totally understandable. I used to use another plugin by Taragana back when it was free, but they charge now. Nevertheless they helped us get alot of traffic for Happy Horror, so I'll probably buy a multiple site license when I've saved up enough.

Just thought it might be worth mentioning :)

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, RT. I installed it a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. Increased bandwidth usage, but I'm hoping it'll settle down once the translations are fully cached. I've started to see some traffic resulting from foreign-language searches, which is what I was hoping for from the outset.
