Blog Drive-Bys for 2007-09-24
If I forget something, it usually means that I didn't do what I said I was going to do. If I tell someone I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it. If I don't, it means I forgot about it, even temporarily. And that, my friends "pisses me off to no end" (using a partial quote from one of my favorite movies of all time).
Please ignore my fit of annoyance and enjoy today's…
Christina at Virtualhosting.com provided some good information with "WordPress on Speed: 17 Tweaks to Accelerate your WP". If you're on shared hosting, like I am, you may not have access to all of the optimizations you can do. The very first one, gzip compression, can't be used with WP-Cache enabled. You can, however, enable it via your .htaccess file like this: php_value output_handler "ob_gzhandler"
Steve of hmtk.com recently did something I had already done. He ended up Saying Good Bye to AdSense for his blog advertising. I actually started using it again for my other blog (and that was my intent), but I'll never bring it back on this blog and some of my reasons are the same as Steve's.
Vic Grace, the Cariboo Ponderer, wrote about her new, little yellow car. She says she always wanted a little yellow car. Funny, because I had a little yellow car back in 1980 — A Ford Pinto Runabout. Some would have called it a POS car, but I drove the heck out of it all over southern California for almost two years and then all over Arizona before practically giving it to my younger brother. It was a 1972 model and I only paid $800 for it.
I went back to read Ronald's article about The Dangers of Quid Pro Quo at the Reader Appreciation Project and some of the comments in particular. I want to be clear on something: In my sidebar, under "Reader Appreciation", I have links to "Comment for a Digg" among other things. It's called reader appreciation for a reason. I need nothing but a link to take action and nothing is ever required in return. It's something I like to do and it takes very little effort on my part.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks like this. I really enjoyed Erica's quick rant, expletives and all. There are way too many bosses who think they're smarter or better than you simply because of their position. Back in 1999, I was promoted ABOVE one of my bosses. You should have seen how fast his attitude changed when I became HIS boss! (I ended up firing him later, by the way, for sexually harassing another employee.)
Are you an avid Firefox user? I am, but I don't know everything about it and I really appreciate the 45 Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts For Windows the Brown Baron published. Now, I wonder how long it's going to take for me to remember even a fraction of them. My memorization skills are horrible.
Rob, over at 2Dolphins, published the Simpsonized pictures of himself and Dede with "It's Like, Us!". Maybe it's just me, but I lost interest in those avatar generators pretty quickly. Maybe it's because I have zero artistic ability, even with computerized help. Oh, Happy Birthday, Rob! Us "forty-ish" people have to stick together.
Bobs probably won't see this for a month, but he's a nice guy who's spending some quality time with his family. I'm just trying to figure out how he came up with 118,207 mystery readers. Anyone?
It's worth the huge chuckle I got out of it. Rose wrote about yOni's pussy purse so I went over to yoni.com to see what else was there. Whoa! Way too much estrogen in that place and me with my wife a long way away. It's something I don't need to be looking at!
Life is not fair. I've been stuck here for the last four months doing most of the home cooking. I miss my wife's cooking. Wouldn't you know it? I just left Janet's blog with hunger pains. The Ginger Chicken Stir-Fry looks delicious and ummm…. never mind. I'm hungry and I have to quit writing, right now!

Oh that would have been SO awesome to be promoted above a boss! Thanks for acknowledging my rant. I really do hate people sometimes

Thanks for the link love. That purse was an interesting find.
How to get 118,207 mystery readers?
It is a hard clan to break into, but a very important one. There is a large mass of people out there that have figured out a way to create a hacked version of Reader that allows them to completely hide what they read as they piggyback connect using other connections. When you stopped by, unbeknown to you, you probably had 189 of them piggybacking your connection and covering their tracks. My logs say 1, but probably at least 190 were actually reading. It doesn't just stop there, they also use smoke bombs – but it doesn't really help…
Thank you for yet another link back! I am very happy that I am on your list of places to check out from time to time.
Reg: Htmksteve's article.
Google are the big boys. They will always take the big cut out of ad revenue leaving the rest with peanut shells. I'm glad more people are recognizing how little Google are giving away for so much real estate/coverage on websites.
I hope everybody else realizes this as well. Google's ToS are very, very unfriendly and rigid.
Thanks again for the link back. I appreciate it.
Thanks for the link love RT.
