Blog Review: Sephy's Platzish

Sephyroth's blog, Sephy's Platzish, is an interesting personal blog that focuses on technical stuff. I would never have guessed he was an Aussie had I not seen an image indicating such on the sidebar. Oops! Wrong answer. He lives in Wisconsin, USA, and is an Aussie in training!

I'm not fond of "blogger blogs" because of the lack of features, but Sephyroth has done a good job of using what's available. I like separate contact and "about" pages and he has the information for both on the sidebar. The theme is fine as it is. I don't see anything that detracts from the overall reading experience, except that some of his articles are really, really long. The most recent, Track Your Visitors with Google Analytics, is an example of a long article.

I'm a little confused. The blog is over a year and half old, with tons of articles. Why is the Google PageRank at zero? It makes no sense at all, unless he got his own domain name after ranking with blogspot.com (or not ranking at all with blogspot.com because that happens). The Google fairy hasn't been around in a few months and that might explain it. I predict a minimum of a 3, maybe a 4, when Google ranks it.

There's a ton of stuff on the blog, a lot of it quite nerdy, so be prepared to read for a while if you happen on over there. I think you should.

Both Sephy and I did the get our own domain thing since the last PR update, so that's why.. Everyone is awaiting this next update and I don't know why it is taking so long. ;(

Great review! ;) Sephy does write a few longer articles usually as a part of the Tuesday Think Tank we do together, he does the techy part where you need to explain stuff and have screenshots. ;)

Sorry I haven't been around too much lately with the moving but looking forward to catching up on your posts ;)

    Thanks for the review! :)

As far as the PR is concerned, I did have a 3 with my old blogspot domain. I registered the domain in June of this year, so I'm trapped between updates.

I do tend to write lengthy posts; I'm looking to move over to wordpress one of these days and that way I can put in a full-width/floating style template.

Thanks for the review, Richard. I usually visit the blogs that you review to see what's up about them. I've now added this site to my blogroll after the visit. Good stuff there! I'm wondering about your issue with Blogger blogs. I know that you've guest posted at one and you found the features a bit anemic. Did you try with a new blogger blog? As you know, my blog is a Wordpress blog – newer than most, as I run a development build (Beta 3 is pretty damn stable, folks!!!), but my other domain is running atop a blogger blog – the one that started my online daily publishing presence. I started blogging when Google bought Blogger and imported my blog to BBEvolution and then to Wordpress, as 1.2 was on the way out and 1.5 was the new fangled thing. I think that you'd find with the new Blogger, that the restrictive problems are not so bad now. I am likely to be doing a comparison post (you heard it first on untwistedvortex) between Blogger, Wordpress.com, and hosting your own Wordpress blog. If you compare the easy ones, Blogger is way better than Wordpress.com, Journalspace, Livejournal, Typepad, etc.

    • My biggest issues with blogger blogs are 1) the commenting system, 2) the trackback/pingback system and 3) The stupid dashboard at the top.

The commenting system doesn't link to your URL, it links to your profile on Blogger. The trackback system is nonexistent unless you an add-on of some kind (like Haloscan) and you have to do something else to hide the dashboard.

If those three things are fixed, it's news to me.
