The Patient Lives But He Looks Like Hell

After taking my laptop down to the bare metal and putting it back together again, a very lengthy ordeal, it now works without overheating. The pink vertical line on the display is still there and is probably incurable.

No matter what kind of deal I come across in the future, I will never buy another laptop. I'm not mobile enough to justify paying the expense and they're just too hard to maintain. I can take a tower apart in minutes, clean it up, and put it back together without having to follow a specific order. I can completely rebuild a desktop in two hours. It took me two hours just to get this laptop apart. I swear there were screws everywhere.

As I sit here and type this, my DSL connection is nonexistent. Subictel did not send anyone out today and Monday will probably be the earliest that they WILL come out. I will be extremely lucky if they do and fix the connection the same day. Somehow I seriously doubt it.

In the meantime, all I can do is sit and wait for a connection and publish this within the few minutes the connection is active.

I know how you feel, I had a laptop once and it just died on me. I'd never buy another.

What model and brand? I think laptops are good because it's easier to use and avoid a lot of extra accessories.

Just be careful about the brand of laptop you buy. Don't go for the cheap ones…

This is an HP Pavilion DV8110-US (DV8000 series). It wasn't/isn't cheap. But it's not as expensive as a Sony Vaio. I have friends who have had problems with every make and model. They seem to do well until the warranty expires.

  Well, I hope mine lasts longer. But generally computers made in Taiwan these days don't last long period.
  
  The original IBMs (of the 80s and early 90s) were something else in class and quality. These days the focus is on producing cheap computers with cheaper components. The advantage with a desktop is that components can be easily replaced, while with a laptop it's much harder.
  
  Anyway, hope your internet connection gets fixed quickly. We are missing you

I feel ya RT! It's embarrassing for me to have to take my laptops in to have a "professional" do anything to them, no matter how minor. Like you, I can do most anything I need to with a tower, but I can't touch a laptop.. they're a totally different - and scary - breed.

I am on my third apple laptop. Not because they broke down, though.I eventually want to upgrade and the damn things won't quit so I can justify it! The first one I gave to my Mom, who seldom uses it but it still works fine. The last one we have in the house for my wife, and she has pretty much abandoned our pc to use it. She still complains about the lack of programs, though. I work on the road frequently, so a desktop seems like a bad idea. These apple laptops have been dragged all over the province in the backseat over some pretty rough terrain, used in dusty conditions (no choice), hooked up to vehicle power supply, packed and unpacked every night, and they work great.
