RSS Feeds: Me and Alexa – Love on the Rocks
When I first met her back in October of 2006, I thought Alexa was great. She had curves and lines in all the right places. She seemed to be able to assess the values of those that she was looking at in as little as three months.
As time progressed, I realized Alexa was fickle and couldn't be counted on to give accurate assessments. Only those that catered to her every whim seemed to win her favor. Those that did not were punished by being ignored. The problem is that her assistant was classified as a spy and thrown out by almost everyone involved in the anti-spy agencies.
I thought she was doing right by me up until the middle of June. Then, all of sudden, she turned a blind eye to me. I wasn't happy. Even after she went to the trouble of hiring an additional assistant later on and I told people about him, she seemed to be ignoring me on a regular basis. She's still ignoring me at times. Maybe it's because most of my visitors don't know her or care about her.
I want to forget her. If it wasn't for the fact that other people are taking her advice on matters, I'd forget about Alexa completely. Unfortunately, I can't as long as they won't.

I wouldn't say that I catered to her every whim. Haven't done anything shady.. just put up the widget, wrote about it and I'm using the toolbar.. that's all.
What's really strange is that my traffic is actually increasing by quite a bit but my Alexa rank is actually not improving but getting worse..did you notice that for your site as well?
I have to conclude that there's something really borked with Alexa.

Yes, I see the same thing. My traffic's rising but my ranking's dropping. It doesn't make sense.
It was doing that before I took the widget off, so I know that has nothing to do with it. I also have the toolbar in place.

Maybe I'll send an email to Alexa to see if I get any response on this. It doesn't really bother me that much but an explanation would be useful for everyone.
Good luck getting an honest answer from them. I seriously doubt you will.

Yep, traffic's rising across my 3 blogs, but Alexa on each is getting steadily worse – if it wasn't for advertisers using it I wouldn't care.

Sounds like my first girlfriend. . . She made a big deal about wanting to be my gal until I started paying attention to her. Nicely written post Rich.
I only recently installed an Alexa button — and my ranking went from somewhere around 1.5 million to 600,000 virtually overnight.
These gyrations should not have any impact on folks like yourself or Mr. Lodge who function much higher up in the popularity sphere.
Still, it's interesting: My traffic is slowly increasing over time… but nothing nearly so dramatic.
And, since signing up with Alexa, my Technorati numbers are slipping, too. Do you think they know about each other?
Ha! Of course Alexa knows about Technorati and vice-versa. I don't think either one affects the other though. Yeah, the Alexa stats tend to be uneven when you get below the 100K mark, not so much when your stats aren't in that 0-100K bracket. It seems lately that a lot of sites are losing their higher rankings with Alexa without any good reason. I've checked 10 popular blogs, so I know I'm not alone.
Don't forget that a link to your site is only counted for 6 months by Technorati, so just to keep your rank level you need to gain new links at the same rate your that your old links become 6 months old. If you want to raise your rank, you'll do so only be getting more new links than expiring ones; and even then your rank will only rise by the difference between the two rather than the total number of new links.
Where this will really hit someone is when they hit the 6 month mark, because until then every link was a raise in rank.
I must be doing something right, my Technorati links keep increasing.
Somehow, I think your girl "Alexa" is related to my friend "Google". They seem to treat us both the same. :smile:

This is talked about quite frequently. My question is, if Alexa is so easily manipulated, who is giving Alexa traffic rankings any weight?

You know, I have an opinion about what you write is what you get! If you can write something with enthusiasm, than you an achieve it. Like writing on Alexa Traffic Rank…
I've started a blog on career, jobs, and so on 2 days ago, and now it has a rank #10,000,667.
Just watch it how fast the rank is dropping!!!

Ha! I was down to 50,000 before it started rising again. I doubt it'll ever get that low again.
