Blog Review: VTOR – Virtual To Reality

"VTOR – Virtual To Reality" is an interesting blog, but a little odd to look at, at least for me. There are selected category links in the header, yet duplicated in the sidebar and I'm not sure why they're there unless the owner wanted to emphasize them. TD Goodliffe said (in a comment) that this is a group blog — I looked at the author names as an afterthought.

I didn't see any theme credits, so I had to assume this was a custom theme. The layout looks odd only in that the right sidebar seems to take up more of a percentage of the screen real estate than I think it should. One of my customary habits is to look for the "about" and "contact" pages, or an email link of some kind. I found none of these. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places.

When I visited the welcome page, I found the details of what this blog is all about: Primarily the business aspects of "Second Life" versus the gaming aspects. Originally hosted on blogcharm (I have no idea what kind of service it is), it looks like the author moved it off of there somewhere along the line. I may be wrong, but services like that are usually slow to load and this blog wasn't.

Regardless of all that, this blog is interesting. There are plenty of images to go with the articles which appear to be in-depth. It isn't my cup of tea, but maybe it's something you might be interested in. Take a look, just once, to see what the blog is all about. There may be more here than I could see in the short time I spent looking around.

Blogcharm is a free blog hosting site like blogger but from the people who make blogexplosion. Our group used that in 2006 and then moved to one of our dedicated servers (in Dec 2006) because the service was too unreliable and slow.

The site is being redesigned by one of the members of the group, so your comments will certainly be helpful, thanks. The categories on the right are going away, I'm pretty sure.

From a blogging perspective, something somewhat unique about this group blog that you might not have seen is the level of site transparency for the money earned and traffic figures. All writers split the income of the site, after expenses, based on the number of posts/participation for the calendar month. These stats are shared in a post at the beginning of the month and internally we share a Google spreadsheet with the detailed figures.

The traffic stats (third party hosted, again transparency) are at the bottom of each page.

  3. Also, one other thing. While many of our postings are SL related, We actually focus on anything that is more virtual. So news of MMO and what not also make the site. Most of the focus is on MMO worlds of which many of us are/were part of Second Life.

You're right. I didn't dig that deep or look for that level of detail.
