One of the first things I notice when I visit a blog for the first time is whether the logo on the page matches the title at the top of the browser. The Treichels.com Blog doesn't. The logo says that while the title in the browser says The Treichels Weblog. It's kind of like branding and I'm sure search engine optimization is affected by it. Of course, Joel's blog isn't the only blog that's guilty of not having them match. Some blog owners "overload" keywords in the title for the browser or the logo or both. Joel, I'll change the name in the post title if you read this and want me to change it, but please take the time to choose one or the other for the title and logo for your blog.
As I was reading through his blog, I discovered that Joel is a former Marine. Wait, let me correct myself: "Once a Marine, always a Marine". Anyway, Joel managed to avoid the Iraq debacle by sheer luck and I can't fault him for that. I didn't want to go to the Middle East in 1990 for operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Desert Calm either. I couldn't avoid it because I was a career Marine and went wherever I was sent. I don't know what his specific job is right now, other than he works at a jail. I could probably guess or find out by digging through his archives, but who has that kind of time?
The theme layout looks nice and he has a contact page, but I didn't spot an "about" page of any kind and no categories/tags/labels list of any kind either. I wonder if this is a WordPress theme or a theme for a different kind of blog, or if Joel didn't do this himself. It looks original, so he gets plus points for that. It's quite obviously a personal blog and I can't fault him for that. Mine is too, even if it doesn't read that way sometimes.
What really makes me curious about this blog is that it's as old as mine, yet has a Google PageRank of 1 and no Alexa rank at all. Does it not get very many visitors? You need to do something about that, Joel, because there's some interesting stuff on that blog.
