Blog Drive-Bys for 2007-05-22

While I would love to be able to go through each and every blog in my feed reader every single day, I think it's humanly impossible for me to do so and still maintain some sort of offline life. I will continue the drive-bys for my feeds tomorrow and may even finish them all by then. My plan is to tackle another source of blogs after this list is completed, but I won't spill the beans until I'm ready. Right now, it's time for another round of…

Blog Drive-Bys

Andy Beard talked about the MyBlogLog join buttons that some blogs had in their sidebars and how, after abuse and a shutdown, they were restored but now require a new URL and confirmation. It seems that any service that becomes extremely popular gets abused sooner or later.

Arnie at Critical Assumption is starting to believe that gas prices and combustion engine technology are part of a larger conspiracy. My question to him is what took you so long to figure it out? I've known this for years. I hate the petroleum companies with every fiber of my being. They are greedy and selfish and want nothing more than to continue to rake in the dollars at the expense of everything else, including the environment.

The DragonLady at DragonLady's World remarked about how "setVisable" is not the same as "setVisible" while compiling a program. I pulled another muscle laughing at that. How many times have I done the exact same thing with different commands? Let me count… Nope, can't count that high without using more fingers and toes.

Just like another blog I've mentioned, Edward's Pretty Women Blog is completely unsafe for work. Unless you like looking at nude women, stay away. Once, my wife snuck up behind me while I was looking at this blog and purposely startled the hell out of me. She already knows what I like and what I look at, so it's no big deal for her. I think she enjoys harassing me about it though.

Alison Lodge, just like her brother Chris, knows good art when she sees it. She posted some pictures from the Aberdeen Art Gallery on her Eleanorblog that showed up fine on the feed reader. You know, I have never been to an art gallery. I've been to museums before, but it was a long, long time ago.

Lyndon at Esplanade posted a very photoshopped image of a golf course on an aircraft carrier and contemplated it as the future of open seas golfing by the rich and famous. I don't know about that. It seems to me the water hazard wouldn't be fair at all. I caught his picture of the Future Carpark while editing this post and have to say one thing. What a novel idea! I wish I had the money to make it.

James at Geek in Paradise ecstatically received a "Blue Monster" lithographic poster in the mail that he thinks was sent to him by Steve Clayton at Geek in Disguise. Only time will tell about that. Although I'm no Microsoft fanboy or anything like that, I'd love to have one of those hanging over my computer space. After all, I do have Windows XP on my laptop, where it will remain until someday when it's obsolete.

Goldcoaster asks which one we think is better, plasma or LCD displays. For the computer, LCD is the way to go. For the living room? I have no idea, I've never had anything but the CRT type television sets. Heck, I don't even have a television right now. My wife wants to buy a widescreen TV, which we've already seen in a local store, but I have no idea which technology it uses. There's something about not having the money to buy right now that doesn't make me want to investigate it any further.

Hari at Hari's Corner wrote his thoughts about programming and how it has evolved. Frankly, most of what he wrote about was way over my head and I'm as much a nerd as the next programmer/scripter/wannabe. OOP? Conceptual programming? Whoa, Nelly! Slow that thought train down.

Jim at I'm Forty What??!! wrote a thought-provoking article on social ranking and bookmarking. He has a low opinion on the existing offerings and I agree for the most part. Digg, and those like it, are centered more around who you know as opposed to good content. One only has to look at what articles make it to the front page to see what I'm getting at. If Jim can come up with a better model, I'm all for it.

After reading the news about it at Blog-Op and then reading the source article myself at John Chow dot Com, I've decided that John's money-grabbing link whoring has turned me off for the last time. So much so that I'm removing his links from anything I have, including my feed reader. See ya later, John!

I took a break to watch the season finale of Heroes (which I'll write about after this post) before I even looked at the feed for Mac's Reviews because I hate spoilers. MacBros wrote that he was disappointed with the season finale. I wasn't disappointed at all and I wasn't surprised by the fact there would be another story since the network had long ago announced that it had been signed for another season. MacBros had earlier reviewed Smallville but how could I take that seriously when he spelled "Lois" as "Lowis"? Just a little jab there, Mac.

If splitting his original MacBros' Place blog into two parts (the second being the one I just mentioned above) seemed a bit odd, you should be aware that he freaked out and did it again with Mac's Opinion. There are others that have more blogs to contend with, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mac decides to do it several more times. He's totally unpredictable.

    Thanks for the drive by.

BTW, Richard, I have noticed that my details are not 'sticky' in the comment any more since you have changed them. Every comment needs to have all the details entered (name email etc.)

Thanks. Haven't had much time to blog of late. I usually go through phases of inactivity after a burst of posts.

LOL @ "can't count that high." I did another one today. Sitting here thinking "That script shouldn't be pulling every single file." Then I look in the directory with the script and wonder why on earth the website was downloaded there when it should be somewhere else. Oh, duh, because I spelled one directory name wrong. LMAO! And to think I was once a spelling bee competitor. ;-)

Thanks for stopping by. Good taste in art must be genetic ;-)

Wow, John Chow has been a big name for a long time. I did enjoy how you kicked him to the curb though. You cut right to the chase and I like that about you. :)

Thanks for the mention Richard. It was definitely a "holy shit" moment. I put up another pic after we managed to straighten it out more. Alas, it will never be completely straight. :(

    • Try putting laying it face down on a clean cloth and then put another cloth over the back, then running a hot iron (with or without steam) over it. That used to work for me (haven't done it in years).

      • James says:

Yeah, that's how I got it as far as it is now. I'm letting it sit in a frame now with heavy things on it (WoW Collector's edition and Mac Wallstreet G3 getting some use), then I'll go back to the iron one last time before I give it it's final home. It was pretty mangled when I received it, so it's already way better than it was.

Thanks for the tip though. :)

  7. RT – as always, thanks for (1) actually reading my blog and (2) sharing some link love – I continue to enjoy your blog, your opinion and your view of life. Thanks again, AM.

  8. [...] has actually already written twice about it, first of all in one of his drivebys where he said:- After reading the news about it at Blog-Op and then reading the source article [...]
