The Joy of Upgrading to WordPress 2.2

Yes, I started the upgrade and then things went bad really fast. Everything was in the process of uploading when my DSL connection disappeared. Granted, it was only for about 5 minutes, but part of the files I thought were uploaded weren't. So… I started all over again. When the smoke cleared, everything worked. My blog was pretty much unavailable for over an hour.

You know, I could have the greatest connection in the world, but when the time comes that I'm doing something important (like an upgrade!), then the connection is crappy. Murphy's law is proven once again.

   I'm glad it's not just me. Usually just after I delete the old files, my FTP connection drops for 30 seconds and I have a heart attack or three.

   How is 2.2? I've heard that the new widgets feature doesn't work properly with the ExecPHP widget, so I'm leaving it for a while.

   The Fantastico upgrade script is definitely the best way to update, unfortunately I didn't know about it 'til after manually upgrading Thermal & Blog-Op several times so they're out of sync now.

   Oh well, manual isn't difficult, just scary when your connection drops!

   I don't use the widget feature. It seems no different than the last upgrade really. No new stuff to contend with, as far as my theme goes.

   Do you find the admin stuff is a bit faster now that jquery is in use? I did when I started using it as alpha, then beta. I like the new plugin feature where if you try to enable an incompatible plugin, it won't work if it causes an error. That saved me a few steps when UTW broke my blog (test blog, that is) with a few nightly builds (I have the new tagging feature as well, due to running nightly builds).

   I use the Easy Admin Access plugin, customized for my additional plugins as well, so I didn't notice anything faster. Of course, I haven't been using the blog that much, other than fixing my stupid mistakes.

   So is it worth upgrading? Features, bug fixes and the overall polish? Plugin compatibility?

   I checked out some of the security fixes and that alone was worth the upgrade. As far an anything else? Nothing broke. I really haven't put everything through the paces, but it seems (to me) to be no different in how it operates. I know there's new features on the back end, but it will be days before I start exploring.

   I haven't upgraded yet, but each time I do it's relatively painless…as RT mentioned.

   I too have a manual install. I like it that way, I'm a bit a control freak I guess!

    Wait, I'm in the middle of a post and I have to actually click a preview link in order to have it open up a preview browser window. Nice! It sure beats the former preview window.

    Do you know whether your webhost provides telnet/ssh access?

    If so, you could log in to your hosting account and simply unzip the new install overtop the old one without having to unzip locally and then upload to the host…

    Makes for much less downtime, and no real risk of partial uploads.

       Jer…good question.

       Also, if RT (or whoever) doesn't have ssh/telnet access, what you've mentioned can still be done via cPanel.

       Just upload your zipped file, log into your cPanel, find the "File Manager". Now navigate to where you're zipped file is & click on it. Over on the right menu you'll have a command that says "Extract File Contents".

       I use this process pretty much every time I have to upload a bunch of files…it's WAY faster & it eliminates the issue of dropping your Internet connection half way through uploading files.

                Change the colors in the plugin's CSS file. It's the background-color.
