Blog Drive-Bys for 2007-05-01

My server took a dive for about 2 hours today, no rhyme or reason. The traffic was coming in at a steady clip before it happened and afterwards, well, pretty freakin' slow. It sucks when this stuff happens.

Mark at CommonSense With Markk wrote a post about bloggers shooting themselves in the foot, which then pointed to an article by John at Finding The Money about ways to annoy the entire blogosphere. In other words, don't do these things. I would be remiss if I didn't mention another of Mark's articles, How Hot Is Your Blog? Lukewarm? Cold?. It contains a list of common pitfalls, mistakes and faux pas when it comes to blogging and also points to other blogs with similar information.

Martin at Community Spark wrote an interesting article on why we shouldn't obsess about search engines. He's a member of the "dofollow" movement (as am I) and had already written how his blog became Link Love Compatible.

I've read about it before, but Anthony at Compost Bin wrote about cell phones and bees from a gardener's perspective. Are cell phone signals disrupting the navigation senses of the worker bees? There's a study that seems to think so. Now if only cell phones would cause mosquitoes to disappear, then we'd have something for sure.

Everton at Connected Internet wrote that he wants a new logo for his blog but doesn't have a creative bone in his body (just like me). Do any of you want to give him a hand?

Mike at ConverStations wrote an interesting article that mirrors my own view about writing like you speak. I know I use too many commas but I never thought of using an ellipses ("…") instead of one. Both can indicate pauses in speech. You know, I've met people who don't pause when they speak and it's very hard to listen to. You do pause once in awhile when you speak, right?

Eileen at CoolAdzine for Marketers asks if our websites are ready for mobile searches and links to a study about it. Apparently more people search with mobile devices than standard computers. Does anyone have any resources on this? I don't have a cell phone or anything else I could even test with.

Sam at CostPerNews wrote about sexism in affiliate marketing and how he's disgusted by it. He asked why the industry is so unabashedly sexist and he answered it himself. The unfortunate part about it is that he's absolutely right and there's absolutely nothing one individual can do about it.

An anonymous Filipino OFW (overseas Filipino worker) in Singapore wrote about how to order coffee over there in his blog at Culture Shiok!. I'm an American, blogging in the Philippines. He's a Filipino, blogging in Singapore. Both of us are different, but similar in circumstances. I can respect his situation.

Dave at DAVEOLSON.ca wrote about how he writes an outstanding post that people keep going back to, to read over and over again. If it sounds like common sense, that's because it is. You'd be surprised, however, how may people don't have any.

Dawud Miracle at Dawud Miracle @ dmiracle.com wrote his personal evaluation of the recent Technorati favorites exchange that a lot of us participated in. He thought making it into the top 100 would have a stronger impact on traffic, but it didn't and he's disappointed. I made it to the top 100 and still haven't seen any real impact from it, so I can see where he's coming from. Was it a waste of time in that regard? Definitely. Was it a complete waste of time? I don't think so. I gained over 700 blogs to look through to see what's good and what's not.

Charity at Design Adaptations offered 5 ways to make your blog stickier. I don't use ALL of them, but it's interesting to see what's recommended.

I spotted a blurb about an Open Office upgrading to version 2.2 at Digital Nomad, so I took a quick look and… I was at version 2.0.2. I hastily upgraded my installation. I only use Calc on a regular basis, but I do use other parts on occasion. I can't believe I missed the notification for the upgrade!

The anonymous blogger at Dilithium Crystalworks posted a bit of old news about Debian Linux with a trivia question included. See if you can answer the question without looking at the comments where I gave the answer. I also suggested that he or she (no way of telling) should claim the blog at Technorati.

It looks like I wasn't the only one who freaked out when I saw that my Feedburner subscribers were at ZERO yesterday. It seems Meg at Dipping into the Blogpond did too! Lucky for both of us that it was a temporary glitch in their system and we weren't the only ones affected. Whew!

Andrew at Dodgeblogium shared his thoughts about advertising on blogs and I agree with him. This is just one of his thoughts, so read a few more while you're there.

Tiny at Doing It The Tiny Bellows Way And Adding A Little Magic wrote about an interesting web service that accepts confessions from sinners. It seems that sinners are more interested in confessing to the masses than to a single minister. I wonder why?

On 'common sense' – I've been giving that term thought lately…if so few have it, wouldn't it then be uncommon sense?:-)

Hope your server benefitted from the break. Stay contagious!

  6. Hey Rich.

There seems to be a little confusion about my desire not to participate in the Technorati Faves meme any longer. I'm not disappointed or disgruntled – not at all.

I did think it was a waste of time – but not because of the lack of traffic. The reason is because it wasted my time and, more importantly, my reader's time. The effort and time I put into getting into the top 100 took me away from my own, core blogging goal – which is to write engaging posts for the people who read my blog on the topics of web-based, service businesses; blogging; and conversation.

So I just wanted to clarify – it's not the 'lack of traffic' that made feel it was a waste of time. It's that it took me away from my core message.

I certainly got some benefit from the meme – best of all was a handful of new readers. That's great. But I don't like the trade-off of traffic-generating memes for new readers.

    Thanks for the space.

Thanks for the mention in the Drive-By. I'm always late in knowing what's happening. Just read this post after following it from Google search. Much appreciated, RT.
