Memories. They wash over me and flood me with images from my past.

Presidio Park was one of my favorite places for two years, from April of 1979 to April of 1981. My memories of what it looked like cannot compare with what it looks like today. I spent at least one day every other weekend at the park, sometimes during the day and sometimes during the night, sometimes with other Marines and sometimes with someone else. I first saw this park because our company commander liked to have us run from the base (Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA), through the tunnel under Pacific Highway and though Old Town. Here's a mini-map:

While I'd love to show you pictures, I can't seem to locate any that won't infringe on copyrights. I can point you to the history, though, at Presidio of San Diego and the surroundings at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.

I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a walkway around the perimeter of the park (which was actually kind of a dangerous place to be at night). One night, I walked through an opening and through some bushes and found a grass-covered slope that overlooked part of the city. The slope was not visible from the interior of the park. It was that exact spot that I would return to on future nights.
