I want to start by reiterating that I'm not a religious person. I belong to no religion. If you think that because I believe in God then I'm religious, so be it. It's a matter of opinion. It's important that I make that statement when talking about religion or the Holy Bible because my perspective is as a person on the outside looking in.
You may wonder why I would even write about this topic. Well, my 21-year old son is extremely homophobic and I'm in the process (a long process) of teaching him the way things are, as opposed to the way things were. It's difficult because he goes to school (college) with his cousin, who's gay and extremely annoying about it. I, personally, tend to think more along the lines of this Homer Simpson quote:
"I like my beer cold, my TV loud and my homosexuals flaming."
Let me get back to being serious. I am no biblical scholar or even one who pretends to understand half of what I've read. I do understand, however, that the majority of the written word was directed toward the people of those times and cultures. The stories of Sodom and Gomorrah interested me early in life and I understood them clearly. A great many religious people believe that Sodom was destroyed because the people within were perverts, gays, adulterers, whatever. This is simply not true. They were evil, to be sure, but it had nothing to do with sexual orientation.
People that behave like the people that behaved in Sodom are called sodomites. There are sodomites living among us today. I'm not one to plagiarize or steal someone else's words to make myself seem more intelligent than I really am. What I will do is point you in the direction of someone who can explain this stuff really well. You know what? He's gay!
I recommend you take a few minutes, with an open mind, to read What the Bible Says - And Doesn't Say - About Homosexuality. Be extremely careful. You might actually learn the truth about things that some people take for granted.
