I added two plugins to help me control the layout of the front page.
The first one is from laBitácora.net called "Limit Post". You have to install the plugin and then edit the index.php file for your theme. What the plugin does is limit how many characters are displayed in a post on the front page. The number can be changed and the "more" text can be changed. If you have problems making this work, send me an email message and I'll be happy to help you out.
The second one is from Cypherhackz called "Previous Posts". After you activate the plugin, you can use its function to replace the "recent posts" function used in so many WordPress themes. What's the difference? With the recent posts function, you could show 1-10 posts, for example. With this one, you can show them as 4-14 instead. No repetition necessary.
Both are installed and working exactly the way I want them to.
(Update 2008-04-16: Both plugins have long since been removed.)
