When I lived in the US (I live in the Philippines now), I owned a car, a house, and bunch of other things that would take too long to list. Now I own nothing and I'm quite happy about it.
When I bought our car here, I made sure that only my wife's name was on it. When we bought our two parcels of land (one in 1987 and one in 2005), I made sure my name wasn't on the paperwork anywhere. Nothing is in my name. Even though I'm not a citizen of the Philippines, my name can be on things because my wife is a citizen. I chose not to have my name on anything.
You see, I know that even when we think we own things, we really don't. Even when you're described as the owner of a car, a boat, or a house on miscellaneous paperwork, the bank owns it until you make the final payment. After that, in the case of a house, the government owns it.
When a government can take something from you, you didn't own it in first place. If you have a house, and don't pay the property taxes, the government can take it. They will take it. You don't own it; you rent it from the government. How much is the rent? The amount of the property tax. Property tax is assessed on other things, but I was never rich enough to have the other things so I can't talk it about it.
Face it. We, as people, are owned by the government. The government takes our money in the form of taxes. If we refuse to pay taxes, we can have property seized, lose the privilege of driving a car on public streets, a bunch of other things, and even spend time in jail. Black Americans complain about the history of slavery in the US. What they fail to realize is that we are all slaves to a government that has absolutely no respect for us or what we should be able to own.
That's my perspective.
