Planet of the Apes Who can forget the classic movie line immortalized by the great Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes (1968)? Never mind the fact that most references use "get" instead of "take".

How many other movies and TV series make reference to the movie and specifically to that classic line? How about Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) with "Well everyone has their own flying car, entire meals come in pill form, and the Earth is run by DAMN DIRTY APES." for starters? Even the remake, Planet of the Apes (2001), gives a nod to the original when Michael Clarke Duncan utters "Get your stinking hands off me, you damn dirty human!"

I was curious as to how many bloggers have used all or part of the quote while writing something, whether for emphasis or for humor, so I did a search. I found so many references; it would take me hours to list them all. Here's a few:

  • TMZ.com invites you to "Get Your Damn Dirty Ape Suit".
  • Voyages of the HMS Swiftsure points to an article about chimps using hammers with "No Longer Just a Damn Dirty Ape".
  • The peppering blog writes about an escaping chimp with "this ain't no damn dirty ape".
  • Mike's Weekly Skeptic Rant writes about a statue that looks remarkably like a gorilla Jesus and comments that he might have found a new band name, "Gorilla Jesus and the Damn Dirty Apes".
  • Ginny Sanchez tells scientists to "Get your evolution off me you damn, dirty ape!"
  • smellydanielly asks the question, "why do I say 'DAMN DIRTY APE!' all the time???".
  • The john heron project has an issue with a review and says, "Get Your Stinking Hands Off My Academic Discipline, You Damn Dirty Ape".
  • Dyspeptic Mutterings doesn't quite fit the list but yammers with "Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! O, Dr. Zaius!"

This is just a few of many. The movie and the classic line are both permanent fixtures in the American culture. I dare anyone to prove otherwise.
