Upgrading to Windows Vista? Just Say No!

I'll upgrade to Windows Vista when they pry this laptop from my cold, dead hands (with apologies to Charlton Heston).

I paid for Windows XP three times; twice as new installs on built-my-own boxes and once as OEM on this laptop. I don't like paying for an upgrade when an upgrade is not really an upgrade. It should have been Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

I hate to rant, but I've read the specs and looked at the screenshots. Windows Vista is what XP should be. Without going into too much detail, my laptop with AVG Free Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, and other non-Microsoft products is more secure than Vista out of the box. I know it, and they know it.

When the time comes and Windows XP doesn't do the trick for me anymore, I'll be moving on to some flavor of Linux.

I have been running Windows Vista for some time now (around 4 months) and I despise it! I have to run it because I'm an IT Director and I need to be familiar, but it is sooooooo slow. See my post regarding this very thing here:

I'll install it on my kids' computer if I ever upgrade their memory. Don't care if theirs runs slow. ;-)

I'll only use it, when it comes on a new PC. At least 2 years away then (gives them a chance to crank out 2 or 3 service packs).

I have Vista and think it is great (also Office2007 is superb). I can't say it is one thing of feature that does it but as whole all the little changes make it great.

For me , it is faster than the same PC with XP, amazingly enough.

    cheers,

  6. If you have a newer computer with enough memory, Vista runs extremely well and good for you if you like it. I have a laptop that's a year old that will run Vista just fine but my son has a laptop that's only two years old that runs it like a dog, even though it has more memory than mine. I didn't jump on the XP bandwagon until service pack 1 had been out for a while. Vista? I'll probably wait for the next version.

My PC is about 3 years old – ancient but I guess back when it was new it was pretty good, but average nowdays. 3GHz HT, 256 Video, 1GB Ram – plenty to run Vista quite well. Like I said, faster than XP on the same machine.
The problem with most notebooks is they have really, really poor video systems and ,usually, low amount of RAM. Try at least 1GB of Ram and you will notice a boost.

Minor compatibility issues crop up from time to time, but otherwise I so much more prefer using Vista to my old XP machine (which I still have running alongside my new PC). I can't give up completely on XP yet, it still does things that Vista refuses to do, like work with my printer! OK, that's a Canon issue, but still…

  9. I may try Vista when they make it to service pack 2. It takes M$ that long to get rid of 99% of the bugs. Hmmm… that mean's probably around 2010.

I tried the final beta and wasnt amused. Took it off the next day. XP is good enough with service packs and updates, tough i personally use a stripped down version. Vista? more as in "hasta la vista baby"

Vista costs nearly two months salary for the average middle-class family living in India.

  12. I looked at the prices and the different editions. After seeing what PCLinuxOS has to offer with Beryl installed, I'm not impressed with Vista at all. And "PCLOS" is free!

Have used windows for ages in various guises. Currently use XP and it does a good job. Simply can't believe the EXTORTIONATE price of Vista! I really believe Microsoft are trying to milk us all before they lose their fight to some of the excellent Linux distros coming up; Kubuntu or PCLinuxOS for example. I will not be upgrading even if the price of Vista comes down. When my time with XP ends i'm switching to a good Free Open source Linux desktop.
