On January 3rd, 2007, David Harris (the author) announced on the Pegasus Mail website that he was discontinuing development of both Pegasus Mail and Mercury Mail, after more than 15 years (I don't remember the exact number — I believe it was 17). The business model he started with no longer provided the financial support he needed to continue development.
On January 22nd, 2007, he announced that he would continue development. This was in response to "an avalanche of mail, phone calls, faxes and other communications". He's in the process of evaluating a new business model. (I was one of the "other".)
I, for one, am glad he was convinced to return to the development of at least Mercury Mail. I used it for more than two years when I ran non-Microsoft products on a stripped down Windows XP machine. Properly configured, it had an ironclad force field preventing spam from getting in. Well, maybe not a force field, but it was nearly impossible for spammers to get to a real account. The very few that did went to a spam box for each user account.
I have a copy of Mercury Mail on my PC right now (I installed it before January 3rd) along with the recent patches. Now, I don't run a server but I have a project to begin and Mercury is the best product for the job. I can't emphasize that enough. It is the best product for the job.
