Who Still Uses FTP?
There are so many ways to send a file from computer to computer these days, the question is begging to be answered: Who still uses FTP?
We know that large files can be sent through numerous new online services as well as many instant messaging clients. Heck, they can even be sent using telnet terminal programs. Why would anyone still want to use FTP?
I think security and privacy issues are the reasons, but I could be wrong. I have a friend who will only use FTP for those reasons, among other reasons.
Speaking of FTP, I have the latest version of Serv-U ready to be installed whenever I need it. I keep an account at no-ip.com to route a domain name to my computer… I have to validate it every so often. Of course, Serv-U is a proprietary Windows server. It's pretty expensive nowadays. I bought my lifetime license when it was only $25.00 in US dollars. One-year support protection for a new copy (corporate) is now $349.95 and there's no lifetime anything.

I use FTP almost every day. :) I upload and download my website files using FTP. I'd use SSH if I was allowed to, but shell access is not allowed on my host (as with most shared hosts). I must admit that I occasionally use cPanel's built in file manager a well, for the unzipper, but its just as easy to use Filezilla or gFTP and drag and drop.
When I used to run my own server, I used to use PuTTY to SSH into it (I was using Debian Linux). The host I use now only allows two ways in, 1) FTP and 2) Web upload.
this might be from 2007 but I still think ftp is the best way for me. Filezilla is portable and works from pretty much any thumbdrive. Given security (and the lack of trust in a certain area) it can be secured easily. I keep editplus 3 on there too so instant editing is a snap.
What else would have the same ease and security for a person traveling abroad full time? Keep in mind that a good many countries will forcably scan your electronic devices for content. I keep my laptop clean and with true crypt and thumbdrives on U3 PW and truecrypt over it.
FTP is still a great solution for geeks, but for everyone else the hosted ftp replacement services such as http://sharefile.com and http://box.net are the best. They make it really easy to set up secure ftp sites with great usability, your own branding, for not a lot of dough.
